Gloxinia sylvatica, another reason to love Gesneriads

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

I don't know how much play species Gesneriads get here among all the fabulous hybrid Saintpaulias, but this one is really a show stopper when in full bloom. Here's a preview of its floral attributes.

hope all are well,
don

Another closeup of the flower. The bright 'dayglow' orange and the yellow throat are a really wild combination and this plant in hardy outdoors to zone 8b.

Thank you, DrDon, this is the natural place for gesneriad show-and-tell. Healthy plant, great picture and fine colors; my favorites. What is the plant with digitate leaflets directly above the Glox. in your photos?

Thanks Dr Don! We all love Gessies too and they are very welcomed here. Most of us are fairly new to collecting them so we always appreciate seeing something new.

Great pics and wonderful colors.

WOW!!

Those blooms are really showstoppers -- brilliant colors!

There are lots of fans of "other gessies" on this forum, too, so thanks for sharing pictures like these!

WOW Dr.Don Beautiful Gloxinia sylvatica. I have only one Gloxinia it grows fast so I was able to share to with a lot of people. It kept getting so big I planed it out side. Now my husband thinks it's his. He has some Epsicas and African violets in his gardens too !
yours has beautiful colors. I was wondering also what was growing behind it. Looks a little like some of my Plumria leaves but not like the plant.
I like all Gesneriads. One if favorites my is Chirita Sinensis Hisako . New plant grow from a leaf really fast. My
Mom Sinensis Hisako plant grows daily.
Thanks for sharing :00))

Wow, now here's an active forum. Thanks for the comments on Glox sylvatica and those are great pics of your plants.

The Gloxinias are surrounded in the greenhouse right now with Ceiba pentantra (digitate foliage), Cassia fistula, and a Patchouli plant someone snuck in there...lol.

I've lurked here a couple of times to admire the AVs and all of the new hybrids. You guys have a great forum going here. When Sinningia cardinalis blooms I'll be sure to post it here.

best to all,

Hi drdon....nice to see you in this forum...looking forward to having you around. :)

Patchouli is one of my all time favorites!
Nothing cures the blues for me like a whiff of that fragrance.

We are a small tight knit group but we are very enthusiastic about our AV's & Gessie's and we all love to get newbies hooked with us, so look out. lol

lol,

I too am an enthusiast of Gesneriads, and have admired them for years. Gloxinia sylvatica is only my second plant but I intend to research and find other species Gesneriads to add to my somewhat meager collection so far. I grew up with Saintpaulias, they were my mom's favorite plants. There used to be an A.V. nursery closeby the house I grew up in but it got replaced with a Macy's or something.

I'll be sure to keep this forum on the watch list so I can keep up with some of the cool things going on over here. Thank you all for the warm welcome. Isn't DG an amazing place?

wooohooo!! a gessie!
having sent most of my AVs packing, I am now growing mostly non-AV gesneriads (and orchids and hoyas and other stuff, of course).
we need to get some non-AV non-episcia trading going....

hiya Keyring,

nice to see a fellow orchid nut over here.

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

ah yes, primarily an orchid nut. lol.

Don I forgot to ask is this plant growing outside ? Year roound ? How is your weather ? It sure is beautiful. Thanks again, Allison

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

*laugh* I also love orchids..and have many!
I am mostly into chirita, AV and epescia right now but love ALL Gessies too!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Korry I ordered a couple more Chiritas from Bluebird Greenhouse, Their plants are large and wonderfyl :)) They will root easy and fast by leaf so I can share in the Spring !

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

hiya Violet_Treasure,

They are growing in the greenhouse right now. I will be putting them out in a nice shady spot in the spring and then letting them fend for themselves as they are said to be hardy in zone 8. Their habitat is cloud forest, so humidity will be a challenge for us, but I think I've got some understory space that will suit them fine. Boy have they colored up and are really putting on a show right now.

WOW any new pictures ? So in the Greenhouse are they in pots ? When outside do you grow them in pots or the ground ? Their pretty easy to root, progate arn't they ? Thanks, Allison

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

hiya Violet_Treasure,

I'll take some more pics this morning as soon as the sun comes up. I'll put a couple in pots and the rest in the ground. They are currently in nursery cans/pots in the greenhouse and seem to be enjoying it. They were purchased from Top Tropicals in south Florida.

I'll have to check that out thanks. Bet they'd grow in ground year round here :))

Great pics everyone... I love to lurk here too. I love gessies of all kinds, I'm just as not good and keeping the names of all of them. [ I know, shame on me.. but, since coming to this website, I will start ].

As usual, Allison I love your plants. The so respond to you loving care! Perhaps one day I will progress enough to trade.

Don - you too have a wonderfully green thumb! I've seen your posts around and love your sense of humor too!

Happy Holidays everyone!!
Anita
