Seed pod coming along

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

Well I have been keeping my breezeway at about 46 to over 50 degrees on a good day...the brugs are doing ok and the rest of the tropicals are still doing good....I have decided to keep the room cooler in hopes of not getting the aphids and other creepy crawlers...no gnats or other flying critters yet...
The seed pods are still green and Im wondering if this is going to slow down their rippening?..I keep watching for any change and they still seem to be green and firm..oh the waiting is killing me....Judy

Corte Madera, CA

judy, i'll wait with you. i was taking off spent flowers, and then i saw a few pods. i have no idea how long it takes for one to ripen. someone will come along to answer our questions, i hope. meanwhile, i'll read on.

I have noticed in my yard Judy, come winter, they slow way down. I had some last year that waited till June!! Made me nuts. LOL. Lots of mine are taking 5 and 6 months for some reason though some are as fast as 3 months.

In the winter, lots of my brugs stay outside and it is in the 30s, 40s and 50s all the time. So yours should be fine.

So Annapet, you have seeds!! CONGRATULATIONS Mommy!

Thanks Kell I wont be so impatient...lol...I keep watching the versi peach that when I brought the plant in the seed pods were tiny..now in a week they are twice the size..this is just too fun....Judy

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I notice that too, Judy. After a few weeks, there is big growth spurt, they just take off. Then they seem to just sit there doing nothing on the outside. But I guess on the inside the seeds are maturing. Makes me nuts. I have pods on my double pink that I am distraught waiting for. LOL. I lost my whole first round when they were still small. Now they are big enough, I think they will all hold. When they are ripe you will hear a huge sigh of relief! Right now they are out in a bad storm. I am tempting fate. I guess what will be will be.

Plump little buggers arent they?...lolol....believe me when mine are ready you will hear me all the way over to your house......then to see what kind of different kind of brug I will get out of this since I dont have a clue which brug polinated my darlings....Judy

LOL Judy. That is the fun of it. I also love the looks of the pods. So many different looking ones. I have one at one of my growing grounds that is so big so fast. If I think of it I will take a pic today of it. I just have to rub them when I walk by.

I am living vicariously through you all.. Is that a simpleton or what? LOL

They say Patience is virtue.. well then, count me out.. I'm dyin for you guyz!! I may be a newbie to brugs.. but I know the excitement of a seed pod is like no other.. okay, maby excluding waiting for Christmas as a kid..

Congrats Judy..
Congrats Annapet!

Kell, good luck on your double pink pods. I have faith in you! I hope mother nature is kind. Next year is going to be amazing!!

Thanks Bonnie. A prayer wouldn't hurt. LOL And getting a hoophouse up would be a sound idea.

Kell I am amazed that they could hang on in the winds we had here the last couple day's. I was out of town, but I could see they were hard winds, because I had pots laying on their wise when I got home.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

The older pods though seem to be on so tight. I often have a hard time pulling them off when they are ripe!

So what does that mean laying on their wise??

I have huge seed pods on two of my brugs - so, how long before they ripen?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Do you know when they got pollinated? It usually takes at least 3 months, up to 6 months. I notice in winter they slow down though. Keep an eye on them. They can suddenly decide they are ripe and then start to shrink up after a week or so.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

How long before they ripen? Thanks for asking the question KayJones, because I would like to know too!

The pod on my "Orange Sherbert" started growing this Summer, guessing around August 1st. That would make mine about 4 mos old. How will I know that the seeds are mature enough? Do I wait until it becomes "the incredible shrinking pod"???

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Shirley. It will show you and it will be obvious. Usually mine start to split open. Then they yellow some. Sometimes people say the peduncle yellows as the first sign. They get softer too.

Here is one that just split.

And some are very obvious.

Kell, have you (or others) ripened pods in water/or bubblers?? I have discovered, after two seasons, that, unless I learn more next season, that I don't really have pods until the fall, late fall. I have one, PF, that ripened in the bubbler, and have tons more, getting close. I'd love to hear from anyone that has ripened pods in water/or bubbler or whatever. If I cannot ripen them successfully in a bubbler, it's unlikely I'll ever do crosses. This year, pollen was soooooo scarce (re drought), that there was no way I could pollinate and my brugs were not lacking in water, I watered, personally, daily, generally twice or three times.

I finally brought my peaches and cream inside as I was afraid the cool air was too hard on it. Within 24 hours, she dropped all of her leaves, but the 2 pods are still hanging on. Comparing the pods with the pics posted here, they are not close to being ready, even though it's been 3 mos.
