Fabulous! I'm sure looking forward to another trade this spring.... you've got lots of lovelies, and hopefully I'll have a few to interest you as well!
I don't seem to do so well with the little ones, although I've tried lots of different things.... perhaps I need to switch to really teeny pots (been using 1 1/2 inch ones). My 'Twinkle Blue' plantlet died, and the parent isn't looking so good either. I did "surgery" on my 'Teenie Bopper' to take a crown cutting & encourage it to branch out, and now it's looking more dead than alive, so I hope the cutting strikes roots! yikes.
They are really cute!! Good luck! I have 3 babies. I was thinking about trading too with someone this spring! The problem is that I do not know what I have. All of the 5 AVs that I have I rescued. I will have to post pictures of them to see if anyone could help identify.
When do you cut the mama leaf from the baby?
Unless the mama leaf dies back, I don't remove it until I'm ready to repot the baby/babies. And I generally let the babies get pretty big before repotting.... as long as they're not getting rootbound sharing the pot, they're OK, and having a bigger root system when they're transplanted definitely helps them. If you transplant a baby AV with an itty bitty root system, even in a small pot it's easy for the soil to stay too wet, and that can be trouble. If I'm repotting AV babies whose roots are underdeveloped, I treat them like a crown cutting and put them into the terrarium or other high-humidity environment for a couple of months.
MsC can you please keep posting pictures as they grow !!! I just love watching babies grow :)) Thanks, Allison
Glad you all enjoyed them... I just couldn't resist sharing the pic. The leaves are smaller thatn my little fingernail. I reallly didn't think they would make a go of it.Amazing!
I'm sure if these lil guys do well I can share with ones who don't get it in the Bunny trade.
CritterO ,
I have so enjoyed my plants from our trade & the shopping you did for me. You should see the coleus you sent! It will be my pleasure to pack another box for trading in spring.
I have the best luck putting lil leaves down in sphagnum moss & the standard seed starter/perlite mix, then putting it in a terrarium type container. I put mine up on the kitchen pantry under the lights there and they do very well, probable becasue it's so warm up there???
I don't cut the mother leaf off either unless it's damaged or there are so many babies that it is shading the lil ones. Sometimes I re root it but most times not.
MsC
Do you mix the sphagnum into the potting mix? or do the leaves just get tucked into a top layer of sphagnum, letting the roots grow down into the mix on their own? Those little leaves are so tiny that I'm not sure I could get their stems into the soil and still have room for a layer of sphagnum.... or does the sphagnum just go on top of the leaves once they're put down? I seem to be missing something here....
I'm glad the coleus is doing well. It's amazing how that plant just takes off during the winter... no "semi dormant overwintering" for it! I hope your other plants are doing fine too.
Thanks!
CritterO,
I just chop it up really fine with a pair of scissors and make a thin layer on top of my seed mix then mix it in just a bit. If you look at the pic at the top of the thread you can see it around the leaves.
I don't really know "why" it works better, I just know that I have better luck with it this way.I suspect that the s.moss has a lil something extra.
I do all my AV leaves & crown cuttings this way with a 99% positive rate for rooting them. Even when I root the leaves in water I mix perlite & s.moss about half and half and get the same results. I don't seem to have a problem with switching them over to seed mix once they are rooted either, so it's worth a try .

Too cute :)
MsC how are the babies ?? H new pictures please ? Allison
MsC where are you ? Busy with Holiday stuff ! I'd love one of these. !!
How are they growing :)) Allison
Haha... I'm here Allison,
I've been a lil busy with my ZooCrew getting them settled in for the winter. I had a baby Canary who needed some handfeeding because his Mom died.
The Widdle ears guys are doing great! I plan to transplant them to seperate pots first chance I get.
I've also been potting leaves and babies like crazy.
I'll add some pics on a new threads shortly.
Thanks for missing me..lol

Zoocrew ww sounds interesting and fun ! Amadie Trail...babies sound like their doing terrific going into their own pots soon WOW. I have been groing crazy transplanting too., Now to find more light room for all these fast growing babies. Hurry Spring !
Allison
Oh WOW So cute. They sure have grown fast ! Allison
Hey MsC, whatchya feeding them little cutie pies? They sure grew fast.
Texas Tea...lol
No, really I used a very dilute fertilizer and POP! They went crazy. I plan to transplant them into their individual pots soon, too.
I was amazed to see ears on them cause I figured as tiny as the leaves were they would blast before they put up ears, so I'm thrilled.
I checked on 3 trays of leaves I put down and all have cute lil ears sticking up, so far so good.
