Bulb Planting

Livermore, KY(Zone 6a)

I have acquired several bulbs that I did not get in ground and I am not sure where to plant them. The Elephant Ears I am overwintering in the house, however on others can I wait until spring to plant them. I know they won't bloom this year however would the bulb still be ok? I haven't put in ground as I am not completely sure where I want to put them yet. Any suggestions.

It depends on which bulbs they are. Bulbs such as grape hyacinths, daffodils and tulips should be planted in the fall.

I know I have daffodils and crocus. If I plant in spring, will they survive and just not bloom?

I think you have to keep them refrigerated for them to survive, but I am not sure. If your ground is not frozen, you can still plant them. I don't think the bulbs will survive a whole year without blooming.

I would pot them up and keep the containers outside in a spot that's not too exposed. I think there was a thread somewhere about putting pots outside for spring bulb containers.... You could then transplant them, probably after they bloom to be sure of getting to enjoy the blooms.

Critter, I did that a few years ago when a neighbor bought a ton of bulbs at the end of the season. He planted most of them but had dozens left over.
We potted them up and buried the pots and mulched them. When spring came he planted them in the ground where there was space.
Some were planted in a cluster as they came out of the big pots, others, mostly Tulips, he separated and planted individually. The clustered ones were fine but the ones he separated must have lost too many roots and did not come back the next year.
I still have some Paper Whites from that experiment, I didn't separate them.
