Question

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

When I was in Germany in the mid 1970s, I purchased a beautiful AV (the first I ever had). I loved that beautiful plant. From what I recall, the flower was the pansy type, a beautiful bright dark purple edged with a nice band of white with a bright yellow stamen center. I have looked and looked for that plant ever since and have never found it. Do any of you have any suggestion as to what it could possibly have been or one that is similar.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Well with over Twenty Thousand African violets I'm sure there are some ! You'd just have to search Ebay and Vendors. Maybe someone in the forum has one or knows where ? Allison

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've never seen one quite like you're describing, but I bet Allison is right -- it's out there somewhere! Your description sounds so lovely that I will surely be keeping an eye out for one like that!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Posie, I just came across this Russian AV on Bluebird's site: http://www.bluebirdgreenhouse.com/html/fimages/20050116-1142-32-6102.jpg

The description calls the color "dark blue" rather than the "dark purple" you mentioned, but names for different colors can be pretty subjective. Thought you'd like to take a look, at any rate.

:-)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

OH that one I have :)I have Mom plantand leavesdown ! It's a beaty.
Does it look like the one you had Posie ? Good Looking Critter :))

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

That looks exactly like the one I had except for the color.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

You might call them at some point and ask about the color... I know I have a really hard time getting a purple flower to photograph as purple rather than as blue, and I've seen several AVs (in person) that I thought definitely looked purple to me even though their "official" description said, "blue."

I'll let you know if I spot another one during my winter catalog & online wanderings!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh gosh yes Jill . Blues and Purples in descriptions look a like and the same. One calls it medium blue it looks purple and so on.
I took so many leaves off my plant and it was small when I bought it that I HAVE Not had blooms from it. Soon I hope. I did buy it from Bluebirds greenhouse. Allison

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, goodie! We'll hope for a report when it blooms, then!

In First Class there are about 400 African violets with dark purple white edge standard , Large, Small standards. It will be impossible to find the same one that was your 's . It may have not even been registerd or from USA. But I'm sure if you keep your eye open you will
be able to find one like it. Here are just a couple pictures :))
Good Luck, I'd go looking threw Ebay, and AV Vendors.

Wow -- those pictures were sure a late night treat to see! Thanks!

Allison, you really should put all of your familiar plants and photos on plantfiles. It seems to be truly lacking in the deserving cultivars of African Violets.

Allison, where do I find that Midnight Radiation?? That is the most ravishing AV I've ever seen!!!
Gorgeous!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I've seen it selling on Ebay . I forget but each time it went high $$$
like $100.00 plus high .crazy zzzzzzzzz

Silver Spring, MD

Are the plants that go for such extreme prices on ebay full blooming, mature plants?

Nanna

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Nanna you know whats crazy. Lot's of times rare ones are extremly tiny. I know I have got some. lol Now any plant book will tell you when you buy a plant buy small as it will get use to it's new home easier. But heh not the size of a nuckle or quarter. People even get big bucks for rare leaf pots. I can't buy them anymore no $$$$ and lot's of time they die. . :(( But I see people bidding one them all the time.

Silver Spring, MD

That is crazy!!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes . Some are so rare. The more rare, hard to get cost the most.
Chimeras, Vintage. I tried so many time to get Silverglades Apples it goes too high. I have to say the most I ever paid for a leaf was $20.00.
It gave me sevend plants that sold from $20.00-$30.00 each. Most times when I sold I'd start plants from .99 cents to $ 2.95 but is their
rare people bid high. When I sold some I'd spend money to get more I wanted. I was always searching out the best leaves !
There are so many Av's impossible to own if you don't have a lot of money. Allison

I like looking for fun see what people have

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sometimes it helps to use quotes when you search, so you don't get odd items that happen to have the words "midnight" and "radiation" in their descriptions...

Enter something like this in the search field: "African violet" "Midnight Radiation"

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

I want to thank all of you for your help in trying to locate the violet I recall. I believe I have narrowed it to a Ballet EL Ina. I found the picture on a Dutch Website; I contacted them and they do not deliver to the US, but advised that some of the Ballets are sold in the US. I will do an Google search and see what I can find.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm glad you've been able to put a probable name to it, and I'll cross my fingers that you'll be able to get your hands on a plant!
