critter sniffers

Stafford, VA

I have read often that it is important to clean up bulb litter when you plant to keep critters from zooming in on your newly planted bulbs but I wonder if anyone has had any experience regarding bulb food? Do your bulbs seem to be discovered sooner if you mixed bulb food in with the dirt? I'm sure the little critters can smell the fertilizer and I was just wondering how smart they were.

I've heard to avoid bone meal & blood meal for just this reason, especially if you have a vole problem. I guess it's less of an issue with non-organic sources.

just concurring with critterologist- i used to plant bulbs with bonemeal, only to find them dug up the next day and scattered everywhere- whoever dug them was more interested in the bonemeal than the bulbs- now i use a premixed "bulb food" which doesn't attract the creatures as much. also i find that if i sort of make everything look as if i wasn't there digging in the garden, i have better luck too- so i step lightly on the freshly dug earth to tamp it down, and water a little with the hose when i'm finished planting-- maybe even scatter a few leaves around so the ground isn't so exposed- we have lots of skunks, squirrels and chipmunks- and they do most of the digging, i think.....

I was told that bloodmeal will keep some animals away.
