OT Camera's

Prescott, AZ

I went to the camera forum for this but just find it all to much. And I found Heather over there too. Seems we are both shopping for a camera. Can those of you who take the beautifull photo's in here of your Hoya's, please stir us in the right direction. I want to be able to take clear close ups of my flowers. I'm not into a bunch of lense changing and all that. Mostly just a point and shoot. How important is the optical zoom? Is this what gives clearer pictures, or is it the lense size? I hope it's O.K. with you all that I posted this in here.

Thanks

lol I spent some time in the camera store today. I'm not very happy with the closeups that my camera takes and would love to get a new one too. I told the guy I wanted a camera that would take really good closeups of flowers. He showed me several cameras and took pictures with all of them using the super macro settings. You could really see the difference between them. He was using shiny objects though, which didn't give the best results. I told him he should have an African Violet or some other blooming plant on the counter so that people could really try the macro settings out. I would say that if you're looking for a camera have the salesperson take a closeup with each of the cameras in your price range and pick the best one. Some camera stores will let you take a camera home and try it for a week.

I don't now how to get the best out of my Canon Power Shot...but I find that when I do things correctly, it takes good pics....and it isn't one of the real expensive ones either!

If you want to take close ups of you flowers and don't want to spend a fortune on a camera look for one that has a "macro" or "super macro" mode. Lots of the higher end "point and shoots" have this feature. I almost bought a Canon G6 but ended up getting a DSLR.

Tami, I still haven't figured it out yet. I'm not sure how important the optical is? Seems like the macro is what is important. There are so many to choose from. Here are some I'm considering. Go to Steve's digicam reviews. Kodak P850, Canon S21S, these two are expensive. Or Panasonic DMC-LZ2, or Olympus C750. These two are both around $200. Once you decide, let me know what you think. I am horrible about making decisions. Hth!

My camera is a digital Optio S40 from pentax. It takes amazing photos, very easily. The macro and super macro are a snap, you just change the dial setting and the camera focuses automaticaly, if you just get it the right distance from the object you want to shoot. It really lets you be creative without understanding the mechanics of shooting. Probably any of the newer digital cameras are good, I like this one a LOT. It has 4.0 megapixels, which is a measure of resolution. Some of the cheaper models go down to 3.0, I think, and are cheaper, but look at the clarity on the following pictures! No tripod, by the way. This one cost around $300 when we got it last year. This picture, of a Euphorbia Lomii thai hybrid, was taken on macro.

This one was taken on super macro, it's a Hoya obovata. By the way, do you have a digital camera now? It is a real revolution to be able to take a bunch of photos and then go in the other room and view them on your computer, edit, crop, etc. I used to hate taking photos!

I took photos very seldom with my old "regular" camera, but since I bought my little Samsung Digimax V4 I seem to take photos all the time! Here's a little makro of the center of H. imperialis.

Awesome pictures.... Thats what I'm talking about clarity... No I don't have my own camera but have used my sisters Minolta. But it seems like the closer you get to your subject the blurer ( is that a word?) it gets. In the Sunday ads there were plenty of camera on sale but not one of them mentioned anything about macro or super macro???Thank you for photo's and knowledge it is helping me out.

Heather will go check out Steves too.. Thanks

Tami, I just made my decision, can't believe I overlooked it! I'm going to get the Pentax Optio SV. Around $200 you can get it on Butterfly.com. It is 5.0mpx, 5x optical, macro, with super macro. Compact, li-ion battery, camera dock, incredible. It got awesome reviews. I never even searched Pentax cameras! I just bought it online. $243, with a $50 mail in rebate! Happy dance!!!
