I whacked the banana pups!

Sunset Beach, NC(Zone 8a)

Well, today was so-o-o gorgeous.........about 75 degrees, so I decided to work in the yard. Being single, I really am not crazy about the holidays so the garden is a treasure for me. Anyway, I had to transplant my banana (musa orinoco) and noticed I had several pups. I decided to whack them off (ouch!) and plant them separately. I did so with a shovel and cut 3 of them from the momma plant. I know this wasn't the greatest time of the year to transplant, but some moving of dirt in the yard forced me to do so. Do you think momma will be ok and also the babies?? I'm new to nanas and just bought this plant this summer. Each pup had a couple of roots and I planted them in MG potting soil. Any tips or suggestions. Thanks!

If your weather stays nice 55* or above for a month or so,you might be alright, give the roots a chance to settle in and start growing,if not better mulch heavy if a hard freeze would happen to sneak up on you,to at least protect the roots.
How tall did it get ?
Did you have to stake it,after transplanting, just in case a wind should get up?

Oops! Not an orinoco, rather an ornata. Does that make a difference? It only got about 4' tall this year, but I did buy it late in the season. It actually bloomed and started to form 3 baby nanas, but then that stalk died out. Not sure why. It has 2 main stalks right now and I left one pup and chopped the other 3. No, I didn't stake it since it's not that tall and it's a little protected. Knowing it's an ornata, what comments/suggestions do you have for mom and the babies? Thanks so much for your help.

Hey Barb, Good to see ya :)) I have 3 new baby (very very baby) nanners. I have never grown them before. 2 were a gift and one I loved and bought on a whim on Ebay after seeing TMan's lying in his driveway getting ready to go under the house, lol. I showed DH what TM was doing and he loved it :)
Come see me when you feel better....Margo

PS Thanks gf :))

Hey Margo! You have dmail. Also, we'll see how these 3 little guys do that I whacked off the mama and potted. If they take, I'll make sure you get one.

Well of course they will live. Frankly I cut them down and throw them away every yr. they spead too fast. Anyone want some just send the postage and I will mail you a baby. Dont have any idea how much it would cost. I guess one of the 7.something flat rate boxes would hole one. Fran. I am under the address page. I had a big bunch of bannana and that hurricane Wilma come throught and knocked the mother plant over. This has happened the past few times I got a
bunch of bannas.

Update on surgery -- mom seems to be having some post op depression and seems a little droopy. I'm hoping with therapy she will be ok. I'm happy to report the triplets seem to be doing fine.....so far. It's cooler this evening so I brought the babies onto the back porch.

Roflmbo, I was already saying a prayer for your Mom when I realized it was a nanner, *grin*. So I prayed she would over seperation anxiety. Glad the pups are doing well.

Here's a question for the general population of this thread...if you were only able to have one nanner...which would it be and why ?

Thanks ! Margo

I like this one because it is medium sized, loves the sun, the color of the blades is a bright medium green with the ribs and pseudo stem having a frosty pink hue over the green.

Apple ( Manzano ) banana tree - banana plant Dessert type banana tree, pleasant apple flavor when fully ripe. Fruit: 4 to 6 inches. This banana tree grows to 10 to 12 feet. The size and quality of this banana tree makes it one of the worlds best eating bananas as well as one of the best dessert bananas. Very thin skined when ripe and super flavor. Sweetest banana I've ever eaten. Excellent banana tree for container growing as in the ground.

My Uncle Bud in Deltona,Fl sent me a few naners from his plant.
