Dusty AV's

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I have a question regarding my AV's in the house. The leaves have gotten dusty (thanks to some dusty basset hounds) and I want to wash the dust off. What's the best way to clean the leaves of household dust?
thanks,

Hey Beg... Looks like we are on line at the same time. I'm following behind you.

If the dust is too bad, I give mine a quick bath under warmish tap water and them gently dry them by patting with a paper towel. I make sure they are completely dry before putting them back under the lights or on the window edge. This causes the leaves to get water spots. If they are just dusty I use a make up brush, the one you use to put on blush. You know, the big fluffy ones. For my minis I use an eye shadow brush. Dust prevents the light from penetrating the leaves and will not allow the plant to do it's plant thing. The results will be slower growth, fewer blooms, those kinds of things that plants do. I dust mine about once every 10 days to two weeks or when I refill the water wells.

Hope this helps

It helps A LOT! Thanks so much. Just wasn't sure if they tolerated wet leaves. Blush brush? I don't even own one! Ha ha ha. I just about never wear 'make up'

Yes and clean plants keep bugs and virus away. Mites love dirty leaves. Yuk

PS don't get the crown wet. If you do dry it. And yes make sure you use warm to hot water.

A soft, small paint brush will do the same thing..

Happy house keeping.

I give mine the occasional "shower" in the warm water of the sink. If I fear any crown rot at all, I just blot w/paper towels......works just fine!

Ditto,

I also give the wells a good rinsing at the same time with liquid dish soap. I don't rinse the detergent off intensively. I hope there will be a little left as a pesticide.
