Yew is right, Kell! They look like a type of fly. I know someone will know for sure.

High Desert, NV(Zone 5a)

Little tiny flies... Do they fly away or just run, i can see the wings, you'd think they would fly off.

yuck.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

to grosssssssssss

Adrian, MI(Zone 5b)

When I see something like this I think of the old Raid commercial.
The only good bug, is a dead bug!!
I'm just going to bed!!!! I feel like they are crawling all over me!!Yuk!!
They need to die!! Good luck!!

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh No! Your beautiful Brug is being over run with bugs!

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

The are flies

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Just my luck, I have midget flies. LOL

I started noticing these about 3 years ago. They ruin the flowers for me. I have them in all 3 places I grow brugs. I was a huge nursery about a month or so ago and they had them too!! I was talking to one of their employees about them, and he said they were recent additions there too. He had no clue either what they are.

With my luck they are the Mediterranean fruit flies and I will be sprayed with all sorts of toxic chemicals from the state ag department.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

PS, yes they fly. But when they are so deep in the flower like that, they all swarm trying to get out. it is so gross looking.

Premont, TX(Zone 9b)

kill them Kell ! Kill em.....yuck !!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I agree. Kill them.

Corte Madera, CA

ewwww...flies!

(or poppyseed, lol.)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Poppyseeds with legs. LOL.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

Ummm...not pretty...I think that must be the first time your flowers grossed me out! Such a shame...I really love those whites. Good luck getting rid of them.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Wow, they sure are worse than when yoyu showed them to me, so many now!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

WWhat can one say but eeeewwwww!? Did you hang a sign out saying voodoo lily or what. Kill the nasty things and do not send them my way. Good luck.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

I have them too Kell, I don't know what they are or what to use to get rid of them.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Look up Syrphid flies or flower flies. I think this is what you have....not all bad.

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

I have them too. First year & I hope my last, they are really gross. I first discovered them when I stuck my nose in a new brug blossom late one night & inhaled them. Eeeeewwww. Since then, I have seen them on other things too. I went out this morning after seeing your post to see & sure enough, here they are on my mandevilla. Not nearly as many, so maybe the cold night temps are doing them in.
Brugie, the link you sent, I don't think that is what they are. They look too big & start at 1/4 inch. These are much smaller. Mine are about the body size of an aphid. I tried to zoom in with my camera but they are just so small that I failed miserably. Here is what I took this morning.
So far it is only us Northern Californians that have them, huh? Lucky us. LOL
I have not attempted to kill them as they do not appear to be hurting anything and I figured they would go away on their own. They are always where the pollen is so I thought perhaps they would earn their keep. I seem to be on a migratory path and often get odd things and then suddenly they are gone.

Wildwood, FL(Zone 9a)

I wonder if it could be some type of fruit fly. They are attracted to tomatoes.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

OH YUK kell, they are more gross than the Aphids, they look like flies from outer space lol

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

Destest flies, 'cause you don't know where they've been before they land on your food! Eeeeewwwwwww...
Other than that, though, Kell which white is that? It is one beautimous Brug! Wow...

Barb

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

So Angela and Sue don't have them yet? I hope they do not go south then. They really ruin all the blooms they set up housekeeping in. And even further south to Janice in San Diego.

Donna, now that is gross but they are so small I can see where you could inhale them. I swallowed a bug the other day. Talk about gross. I have no clue which kind either. It flew into my mouth, down my throat and it happened so fast. I gagged when I realized what had just happened. In fact I am gagging now recalling it. I also have them in my mandevilla plants. They like the tubular ones it seems.

Delisa, they do look like fruit flies, but bigger. Here is a close up. Kind of foggy! Sorry!

Barb, that is one of my new brugs, I can't remember the cross. I think it is a RK one. It is one of my favorite new ones. All summer it bloomed with its flowers straight up and much bigger now it is nodding.

ICK!! They have maroon headlights!

Thumbnail by Kell
Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

Barf! At least I could blow my nose, you poor girl! LOL
I went out to study mine to see if I could see red headlights & I cannot see that much detail cuz they are so small! So either you have bigger ones then me or you have a great macros lens on your camera. One creepy thing though, as I held up the flower & really got my face in there to study them, they all started marching towards me. Probably my warm coffee breath, but still, it was like Night of the Living Dead the way they were coming at me. I finally decided it was your lens & ran back in. LOL
Do you think yours are as big as the ones in Brugies link?

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Aaaaaccccckkkkkk Kell, stop telling those stories! Geez...I'm having a difficult time not gagging! LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Brinda!! Think about poor me. LOL Gulp gulp!

Donna, it is the joys of having a 8 megapixal camera. I cropped one of the bigger pics I posted down to so small. They are tiny, tiny and tons of them. You got to figure to fit so many in the end of a corolla tube, they must be tiny. ICK!!

How long are they? 1/4 to just under 1/2"? Where is the brug, indoors? Outdoors? My guess is they are cluster flies, latin name Pollenia rudis.

Here is a link to a picture, and other information:

http://entweb.clemson.edu/cuentres/eiis/factshot/pages/ClusterFlies.htm

The flies may have invaded your greenhouse (if that is where this brug is) and are just hanging out in the corolla of the brug. They won't bite you, just gross you out. I think if you absolutely could not live with them you could use a insecticide spray you can get at Wal-Mart/K-mart etc. but look at the label and make sure it is labelled for flies.

If they are much smaller than 3/8 inch maybe they are fruit flies...they look too big for Drosophila however.

Joseph

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Joseph! I doubt they are even 1/4 inch. They are pretty tiny. But bigger than fruit flies. Later I will try to get a pic with something else in the picture so you can judge the size.

I am not afraid of them, I hate them. LOL. They ruin my enjoyment of my lovely flowers. And they go to each one!!! So many of them. Who could look lovingly at a bloom that looked like this? LOL

Thumbnail by Kell
San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

They go to each flower and just stay there inside the bloom crawling around and probably making more babies. Honeymooning in my blooms!

I never see them flying around unless I disturb the bloom. These are all outside. They are all over here, for miles. These are a new bug here. I haven't had them for over 30 years and suddenly about 3 years ago they showed up. They are increasing every year.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

they look like sewer flies to me aka drain flies.

they also look like a fruit fly relative due to the red eyes.

gosh i would be putting hot soapy water on my flowers to get rid of them. just YUck!!

maybe you need to take one to a pest control person and ask what it is.

i am sorry to about the beautiful blooms being marred by those.

Capture some and take them to your local extension agent so they can do a proper ID on them. That service should be free, compliments of the government. Then you ought to have a handle on where they are breeding and how to control them.

Do you have cattle grazing in adjacent property?

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

Kell, I just did a garden scan and so far so good. Hopefully, they will be easy to kill without harming your brug. (This white is gorgeous). I will check my mom's Mandevilla next time I am in Alameda.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL. NO. I wish I did though. I would no longer buy fertilizer. I live in place overpopulated with humans. Property here is hard to come by so the houses are on top of each other. I am about 20 minutes from San Francisco.

Great pictures Kell...
Nasty looking subject though.... LOL
BarFFF O ramma.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I love Alameda, Angela!! I hope she doesn't have them! Do Mandevilla live in Alameda all winter? What zone is Alameda? Do you know?

Hi Kin!! I was going to email you to see how you were doing. You been away?

Hi Kell
I have been busy getting everything indoors and ready for winter. I have not been anywhere but work ~ In the garden and up and down the stairs to the basement. LOL
Big Brug Migration to the dungeon!
Thanks for thinking of Me!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Glad to hear all is well. I haven't really even started getting my winter act together! The weather can't hold forever like it has been. Just amazing!
