H. bicolor

Prescott, AZ

This is a very pretty hoya, does anybody have one of these? Where in the heck could one get a cutting of it? I think I also need a H. aff. cystiantha, it must go by a different name, as I don't here alot of mention of it. Going to go do some checking.
I like the way the flowers are somewhat shapped like a cup.

Did you see it in the Fratena? Thats a really gorgeous picture (I only saw a thumbnail of it, and don't have the issue its in) but I suspect that it dosen't look as impressive most of the time of bloom. I think its a member of the finlayonsonii group, which mostly have those pretty red edged cream flowers, which look like the one in the Fraterna only briefly before they reflex, and are then not quite as striking. Does anyone know if this is so?

Yes Mark that is where I saw it, it was on the cover. Isn't it a beauty. That's a shame if it loses it edge, it's just to stunning. Wish we all could get our hands on some of that one.

Tami what does it look like? That's a new one to me. Inquiring minds want to know:-).

Tami, that one has been on my wish list for a long time. I saw it on the cover of The Fraterna too. When Carol and I were at Ted Green's I had that one in mind but we were so rushed and he has soooooo many hoya that I never got a chance to have a look for it. I will email Ted as I owe him a thank you for the visit. Will see what he has to say about it and post it here.

Awanda I will go and check and see if I can find where I saw it at and get the link.

Susan, good idea, It looks like it could be a pretty big plant. Oh, maybe he can get us a connection too.

Gonna go find this picture.

I just happen to have that issue of the Fraterna:

Hoya bicolor Kloppenburg sp. nova.

Like Hoya juannguoiana Kloppenburg but differs in that the foliage is ovate-cordate apiculate, not obovate to obovate-lanceolate and smaller; the flowers are also smaller.

The photo on the cover and an inside photo of the leaves is by Monina Star.

Might be interesting to acquire H. juannguoiana as well, but in the photo I saw, the petals were reflexed like H. finlaysonii. It's sometimes misleading I suppose as we don't know at what stage the bloom of the H. bicolor was photographed.

Ted does have H. juannguoiana as I remember seeing it at his house.

H. juannguoiana was on the Jan - March 2002 cover of the Fraterna and didn't do much for me. ???? Hard to tell though. Those photos can be so misleading. The flower doesn't look much at all like H. bicolor, at least in the two photos we can easily see.

Thanks Awanda. Has yours flowered? If so, what did you think of it?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Let me ask Ann Wayman, too. We gonna find that puppy!!

No, I'm with Susan, H. juannguoiana doesn't do it for me either. But your right, could just be the photo. I did find H cystiantha on Ted Greens site. I was reading where H. cystiantha and H. campanulata were the same Hoya. But he had them side by side and they are two different Hoya's. Now I can't decide which one I want..

Those of you who have ordered from Ted Green. Oh Awanda.. Any problems getting an order into Arizona? I have a list.... Any body having problems with loading he's cataloge? I can't get it to load past the L's.. Which is probabley a good thing!!!

Carol, you are so lucky to have great connections. Oh I hope she can hook us up..:)

Tami, I think there is some dispute about the names of campanulata, cystiantha, wallichii, et al. Ted Green has the larger flowered one as campanulata, the smaller, slightly darker colored one as cystiantha. I think Carol has them as the other way around (I'll check) and wallichii I think is an obsolete name for the larger flowered one?
I haven't had any problem with deliveries from Green in California, and he is very speedy in sending them off unless he is on one of his collecting trips. It does take a while for his page to load, due I guess to all the high resolution pictures, but it will eventually. If you can get it to load fully, check out his offering of H.macgillivrayii X H.archboldiana. Fantastic, I think I need to have that.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

As far as I know....the smaller flowered one is H. campanulata and the larger one is H. wallichii. At least, that is how I have them in my catalogue....my story and I am sticking to it. Gotta ask David about his opinion. Will also look them up....

Sorry...really tired tonight after the plant sale! We made nearly $6000. Just abut 6 of us growing the plants!!! Needless to say....I don't want to talk plants for a while...Hoyas are OK...

Night!

I'd get those two from Carol, since her plants are allways nicely rooted and get off to a MUCH faster start than from cuttings. Ted Greens cuttings are usually only a couple nodes as well, so it will be a LONG time untill you see flowers on most of them. But what a selection!

Yes I discovered them in Carols too after I Checked out Teds. Will def. stick with my main girl on ordering... Just didn't see them earlier. Will have to go check out H. macgillivrayii X archboldiana, hope it loads, tried several times.

Wow Carol congrats on the plant sale. Wish I could of rummaged around at that one. You have D-Mail.

Nope can't get it to load after the L's.. Darn it. Mark if you can find a picture of this one some where else, please send the link. Have to see whats on your wish list.

Here is a picture from Ted Green's catalog, I suppose it is copywrited to him- *credit credit credit!*
His description includes the following-
"2 1/2inch bright dark red flowers on a vine like archboldiana" He lists it at $20 for a cutting, probably about two nodes.
It is also known as "kaimuki" and I have seen it mispelled as "kamuki" as well. Isn't it great? No mention of a scent. Try his website again, he has been doing some work on it lately.

Oh yes, I can see why this one is a must have. Wow. I think the cat would appreciate this one too. :) Off to see if I can get the website to load. Thanks for the picture..
