We're supposed to go to 29 tonight.
Dr Seuss needs a few more days
Oh dear.. look at all those unopened and "about ready" blooms. Bless his heart, he looks like he's getting all dressed up and won't have anywhere to go! :-(

Is tonight your first freeze, Linda?? It got down to 28 here last night and thank goodness I believe them or you would not be receiving a special cutting soon. I cannot swear when because I will be spending the weekend with all my grands; however, I have the special girl safely housed in the GH with commoners, such as hibiscus, banana trees, et al, she should be safe until I get her in the mail...I was amazed that VP, who doesn't like cold, didn't miss a beat, I'll see what happens tonight...
Mine had 50 buds ready to open. The plant had not bloomed yet all summer. We had a very cool and rainy summer so they were behind. We cut it down last night.
Can anyone recommend brugs that bloom in cooler, rainier climates?
Hahahaha, woodspirit, you name it, if I like it, it's a cool weather girl. I do have a True Arborea White that prefers cool weather, so I'm told - I grew mine from seed this year, in full shade, and she has a bud and is safely, I hope, housed in my GH. BTW, she is self pollinating...
Poor Linda! I know how you feel. She is beautiful! I decided tonight to go out and get a few cuttings since we're having a cold spell. It's not supposed to go below 40, but we have a little wind with it. So to be safe, I gathered a few. I only have 2 mature ones (Dr. Suess and some sort of unnamed peach) and several young ones that I just brought the pots in. I couldn't bear to cut all the leaves off the cuttings since I had some blooms so I got them ready and put them in vases. It's a wonderful fragrance in the house. In a few days I'll trim off the leaves and let them root (although I did put Rootone on them before putting them in the vase). Linda, maybe you could sneak out by the light of the silvery moon and grab a few!
Also, where do you live in Cola? I'm originally from there and my brother still lives there (in Blythewood).

Linda, since it is growing in a container it can be moved indoors where the buds will continue to open. That way you can enjoy the beautiful flowers and have it perfume your home at the same time!! I have several blooming indoors at the moment.
linda i feel for you!!!!!. my two in the ground are gonna die off and the one in front had a bloom ready to open(white one either from you or kyle).
but we need it to kill the asian bettles and other bugs.
the ladies in the next town were beautiful and i feel for her too.
oh my. i had to dig the kittens beds out today so they would have thier beds tonight to be warm. its already cold. at 6 the weather man said 49 out.
Dr Suess did great for me in the house, opening about 35 blooms after I brought it into the dining room. Now it is getting more pods.

Wish I could have moved it, but it is at least 8 ft tall and about 8 ft wide. No way I could get it through a door. It is in a pot, but the roots have grown out of the holes and into the surrounding soil. I've looked out this morning and can see some frost, I'll venture out in a bit and see how bad the damage is. Tonight is projected for 28 again, then we'll be back in the 40s for a week. I had really wanted blooms in the yard when everyone comes next week for Thanksgiving.
Oh boy! I had Brugs also that the roots were growing out of the pot and into the surrounding soil. Getting an 8 x 8' wide tree through a door would be very difficult! I'm sure that you are covering it with sheets and/or blankets to protect the delicate blooms from getting frosted. Dr Suess would have indeed made a spectacular show for all your Thanksgiving guests!
Every extra bedsheet in the house and a couple of strings of minilights can save plants here down to about 28º. The wind chill is really hard on them too. I'm sorry I'm so late suggesting this.
I am going to wire-up my favorites when I get home.
Sidney
