most clivia only bloom once a year, & some bloom twice a year :-)
sometimes the clivia in the big stores will come from a different climate
& be blooming at a different time of the year
after they settle down, they will bloom every year if taken care of
yours sounds like it is happy & healthy & i'm sure it will bloom for you next spring

Dick, I also have some Clivia in my garden that used to bloom profusely. Each year it blooms less. I wonder if it needs to be divided, and if so, when is the best time? Thanks for any info you may have.

Thanks for the thread, Marie.

Global Warming?

LOL

Could be...we are having gorgeous summer weather this week. Do you have clivias, Carol?

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

I have a var. clivia and a couple other's that I got in plant trades. The most common one has bloomed twice this summer, but none of the other's have bloomed. I have kept them watered, but I haven't fertilized at all. I am thinking that may be the reason I am not getting blooms.

Have you guys seen the variegated ones? You do not need any blooms for they are so entertaining as is.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

I'll have to figure out what their nutrient needs are. They look so nice when they are blooming. I really think mine are overcrowded at this point.

I have seen the variegated ones and they are gorgeous.

Angela
i think they do have some problems with over crowding
& they need feeding at least a 2 or 3 tmes :-)
i had one that had been in the same place for 12 years & had also slowed down on the blooms
i dug it up & gave a doz offshoots away & planted another 6 in the back yard
& they all bloomed the next year :-)
i also added some time release fertilizer in the soil with them
now would be a good time to divide them

Thank you, Dick. That's what I was hoping to hear! We inherited the plants when we moved in, so it's hard to say how long they've been there, but they look like they've been in a while. Having some to share AND getting more flowers - you can't beat that!

What colors does everyone have? Mine should bloom in the spring it will be old enough. Suppose to be orange.

I do not let mine get too crowded but there are HUGE clumps of them in Balboa park that bloom profusely too so go figure.

I have 3...a delightful very broadleaf Monk, a yellow flowered minauta and a huge, very red-orange flower with the long, narrow leaves(?) I have only had Clivias for about 3 months. I think they are wonderful plants. My narrow leaved plant has many, many pups (?) but the person I bought her from said to leave them with her until at least next Spring. Everyone that sees her wants one LOL.
I was thrilled to see this post started. Please keep this going, the information is soooo good.
Happy Thanksgiving to all, Margo

I would love to know the best type of soil to use and also what type fertilizer ?

Mine are all orange. Do they come in colors other than orange/yellow? I have heard the plant sap can be very irritating (when dividing or saving seeds). Has anyone experienced this?

Your red/orange must be gorgeous, Margo.

Hiouchi, CA(Zone 8b)

Janice
there are some people that are sensitive to any & all plant sap
Aroids are notorious for irritating people's skin & i suppose Clivia can also

Quoting:
Do they come in colors other than orange/yellow?

here is a Japanese site with hundreds of picts of Clivia flowers of every color imaginable
http://www.geocities.jp/toshi1012002/clivia3.html
i have many of the clivia colors ranging from near white to the dark reds
modern hybridizers are just beginning to learn about some of the Clivia nuances
they are even crossing the various 6 species of Clivia & getting different flower shapes also
along with the multitude of flower colors :-)
the future of Clivia keeping is going to be very exciting

Uh-oh, Dick, now I'm really in trouble! I had no idea there were so many varieties. I love those nearly-white ones. I'll have to keep my eyes open for all the new-comers.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

first off thanks everyone for the info.

its been a hetic weekend so far as my blazer decided to strand me 50 miles from home. lovely.

i have the one and its orange. i have not seen any other leaves or what would be concidered baby leaves on it.

is it a bulb if so then it produces baby bulbs?? never took it out the pot it came in. seems so happy in it.

fertilize 2-3 times a week or month or year????

okay i think i am caught up on the thread. started it and came on today to like 20 replies. hehe

thanks everyone.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

Marie, I think I will divide mine sometime this next week. Maybe I can post some photos when I do. I think Dick meant 2-3 times a year on the fertilizer.

Sorry about your vehicle. I hope it's an easy fix.

San Jose, CA

What is the normal bloom time for clivia in California? Someone gave me one a couple of months ago. Any tips on what type of fertilizer? I have some time-release fertilizer, but it is heat-sensitive. If I apply it now, the plant won't really get much because the weather is turning colder.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

Mine always bloomed spring/summer. I have heard they will sometimes bloom twice a year...perhaps if they're well fed?

Hiouchi, CA(Zone 8b)

just a note
for those that have Clivia that are not blooming
Clivia need a cold period below 50 degrees to produce flowers
& this is not a problem anywhere except in the tropical regions
or if the plant is kept inside the home or a heated GH
most Clivia bloom in the spring after the cold winter period
& some will bloom again in the fall
feed during growing period, early spring thru fall once a month with 15-5-15
