Need help with ID

Fruitport, MI(Zone 5a)

I bought this one without an ID tag. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

Kathy,
Looks like one that we have called Fairy. This is confirmed by several other websites. Don't look at Exotic Angels website. They throw their tags in a bag, draw them out and randomly assign them to their plants...apparently.

Kathy, if you have others that you can't id, perhaps looking here will help

Thanks! That's a great link for identification. I think one of my problems is many look quite similar. I have one that I bought that was named (Devils Paradise). It looks just like the Chocolate Cream. I have couple others that look quite similar except for the size of leaves. I've been looking to purchase a couple of begonia books to help with identification and propagation. My husband is laid off right now so haven't gotten them yet.

Which books are you thinking about, perhaps I have one and can do some reference for you? Just a thought. You know the thought of reading books about begonias is like a highlight of my day! LOL, no seriously I'd love to do some begonia sleuthing!

If this is the same begonia as mine, it is Harmony's Lazy River. Hope that helps.

bogoniacrazii, MrsC suggested "Begonias Complete Reference Guide" I checked it out and it's quite expensive so I'll have to wait on that one for a while. Another one I was thinking of is "Begonias: Cultivation, Identification & Natural History" Do you have either of these? Which ones do you recommend?

Marie_ Thanks for checking but I don't think we have the same variety. The leaves on mine are much smoother and the color is different too.

I have the first book, by the Thompsons. Yes, it is expensive, and I got mine used. Bonus is that it is signed by the authors. it says "To Dr. Siegler, Happy Begonia Growing and Studying! Millie Pieon...(cant read the writing) and Ed Thompson October 23, 1981)

SADLY so many of the photos are in black and white (DOH! we really need some color here!)
Did you look at the Aides and Gish site? I'm trying to find the link...hold on...

Do you mind If I cross post to the yahoo begonia group? Or you can, here's the link. Just know that if you reply via the web site, photos won't show up. I don't mind posting for you.

Could you post for me?

can do!

Posted it, and then also looked in my Thompson book. I don't see anything that looks like yours, even in black and white photos. Have you tried the ABS site? I can't remember if they have many rex photos or not..

marie, your 'Harmony's Lazy River' is gorgeous! Does the 'Harmony's' refer to Harmony Farms in Sorrento, FL? Recently found several that I suspect are Harmony cultivars. On our recent visit to Florida we finally found Harmony Farms - unfortunately after hours and one of the owners (Robin) said if she didn't have a prior commitment she would be more than happy to give us the tour :( They grow 150 different Begonias but are only available through their brokers. Next year their place is at the top of our list for nurseries to visit.

Will Harmony sell to visitors? Are you headed to the begonia bash in March?

Kathy, the only response I have from the yahoo group is this:

It sure looks like my Begonia rex, 'Fairy'.

Aneita in SO CAL, USA :o)

probably not what you wanted to hear. LOL.

Take a look at the boomanfloral web site and scroll down to their photo of Fairy, it is close to yours.

begoniacrazii, unfortunately they don't sell retail :( They were willing to show us around if they had been opened, but we would have had to go back and we were leaving the area and heading south. It sounds like they have some really neat Begonias, but so far we're unable to locate any of the brokers who will sell them individually, just as an assortment and you usually have to buy in lots of 100 :(

I wish they would at least put out a web site with photos to make ID a bit easier. Plus it's eyecandy for those of us begoniacs who can't get enough.

did i read somewhere on DG that you own a nursery? Or am i mistaking you for someone else

begoniacrazzi, I think you're right about the begonia being "Fairy". Thanks for your trouble.

rcn48, Harmony's sounds like a neat place to visit. Hope you'll take lots of pictures to share.

kathyvm, if we make it there, we'll definitely take pictures! The area that they're located in (Apopka) is one of the 'richest' parts of Florida for wholesale suppliers (second only to Homestead, much farther south). It's unbelievable, you can travel for miles in this one area and there are nurseries on both sides of the road offering everything imaginable - from tropicals to conifers!

begoniacrazii, I agree, would love for them to have a website just to see their selections. But I think these two women like to be somewhat 'anonymous', only selling to brokers, no retail sales. Yes, we do have a nursery. My husband has been in the business for over 25 years but I've only been 'on board' for the last six years - loving every minute of it. We eat, drink, walk, talk and sleep plants! Begonias, however, are just our "hobby" - for now that is :)

It's definitely 'Fairy!' I have this guy.......came w/tag......terrific plant. =)
