Some of the non-heat loving plants are happy that "winter" is fast approaching. Something a little cooler that 85 would seem more seasonal to me too but our warm spell is hanging on here.
Clivias Enjoying Cooler Weather
Wow, so pretty. I didn't know they bloomed in the fall.
Mine bloom spring and fall. They do not like the summer heat though. These plants are probably 15 yr old or so. I separate them every year to keep them from getting too crowded.
I have some. When my poinciana tree died, they were getting too much sun and sun burned. I think I also overwatered them. Do they need shade? and kind of dry?
Long established plants seem to survive the sun but get crispy around the edges. They love shade-not something I have a lot of so they get their toes toasted a but. Mine dry out between waterings. They are in prety basic San Diego, mostly clay and rock, dirt. They are pretty no care around here and should be for you too. I toss some osmocote at them a couple times a year and some composted manure in spring.
Clivia are really a shade loving plant, they can take a little morning sun
but like your experience shows they will sunburn with too much sun
they have very large roots & can take deep watering with long periods between
soooo in semi shade they could almost be called drought tolerant :-)
definitely a plant that does not require a lot of TLC as long as it is in the ground
Janice that is a really nice color on your Clivia
i have started the last year or 2 taken a liking to the variegated clivias :-)
& of course some of the hybrid colors

Janice
does your Clivia bloom twice a year spring & fall ?
or only in the fall ?
there is a Clivia called 'Sahin Twins' that blooms twice a year
Dick
Dick, Socal and I were just talking about you. Were your ears burning. I am salivating over those variegated clivias. I did not know there was such a thing. I have some variegated agapanthus that they would compliment nicely. Gorgeous. What color do they bloom.
These fool things bloom any old time but most of them bloom twice, spring and fall. I do not think they are anything special. They came with the house and I handed them out by the ton when I first moved in here. They are just the basic clivia that grows all over here. Nothing special that I know of.
I just had to look again at your striped babies. Where DID you get them?
Janice
PS your hyperlink did not work would you please post it again. Thanks
edited to say: I just looked up the twins and it is my plants-broad leaves and all. I had never much thought about an ID on them before. Cool. Thanks for the info. Did I mention that your stripeys are beautiful lol!?

OOOOOOOOOh I am never going back to those clivia sites agaiin. Keep your creditcard in another room. Beautiful though. Learned a lot too. Those breeders would faint at the lack of attention mine get. I just yank them and move them as the mood strikes me and they just keep on blooming.
I agree Janice, his variegated are meant to drool over. You have some real white ones too there Dick on the left. Very nice. And is that a painted fern? I love it.
Yours is pretty too, Janice. I love the color. I have some green ones that I have had for maybe 30 years. I totally ignore them, no water or anything. I do not think they flower though but I wouldn't know for I totally ignore them. I am going to start loving them and I hope they do not die on me.
I just put in couple in Oct; suppose they won't bloom until spring but we can wait. Janice, your pictures make me anxious!
And Strever, the variegated is outragious; will have to find some to add to my collection.
Thanks for the beautiful pictures.

These were in a huge clump when I moved here. I got rid of most of them and spread the others out. They started bloomin like crazy. Now I go out once a year and get rid of some so that they do not get too rootbound. They are by a walkway so I do not want them to get too overgrown. Digging plants from under the sidewalk is NO FUN.
Those are amazing. How long does it take to grow a bloom from seed?
Linda
it takes almost 5 years from seed to bloom
which might be the reason i like the variegated so much
gives one something else to enjoy while waiting :-)
Dick
Oh look! Even the seeds are striped! Dick they are quite beautiful. Thanks for sharing them. I had no idea they even exsisted. Sigh. That want list just gets longer and longer lol!
Janice
i just reread the above & see your question about the color of the blooms
the variegated clivia have been the same orangey red color for years
& in recent years there has been a lot of hybridizing for colors
now you can get a Clivia with a flower almost any color you want
from white to dark red, no blue yet :-)
& the variegated are next, the variegated with yellow & or pastel colors are VERY expensive
to see a large range of colors & varieties goto the NACS site
http://www.northamericancliviasociety.org/
look at the picts of the recent auction
there are some Japanese sites that have unbelievable picts of colors
& some chinese sites with unbelievable leaves
if anybody wants additional info just holler
Kell actually the fern is a silver leaf, i have them front & back http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/60943/index.html
