A view of the resaca(sans gator)

I was going to post my hibiscus acetosella all by itself, but realized there is a hibiscus forum now. Here is part of my garden along the back fence.
I have two colors of the dark leaved hibiscus.

oh that is so lovely. haven't seen any buds on mine yet.

They budded and flowered overnight it seems!

I gave them a haircut a 6-7 weeks ago 'cause they were huge. hope I didn't do something that might keep them from flowering.

Can you tell me how that colors compares to the fall coloring of the burning bush?
Love how the sun really brings out the colors!

Such a pretty view. But I think baby crocs will fit thru there, Susie!

Shoot, I still haven't potted mine in a bigger pot!!

T-man, the foliage is burgundy all the time. Want me to save you some seeds?
Vossner, I've pruned these and they're flowering. They put out buds at leaf axils on the ones I cut back.
Kell, if I find a baby croc, I'm sending it to you!

cala, this is a really dumb question but I really don't know. On the acetosella, will I have to plant seeds next spring, or will these die and come back? The trunks of mine are over 1" think, it's hard to think that they would even die back!

same question for castor bean.

My H. acetosellas got frosted on really bad last year, but came back. They are prettier if you grow them from seed each year. Mine that I planted from seed this spring are huge, those in the picture are from seed this year. I cut them back because they were getting 10 ft tall. The left over ones from last year aren't as pretty and the stems got so heavy they broke(especially the ones growing out from the sides at the bottom).
Castor beans will freeze, best to plant new ones cause once the old plants get frozen back, they aren't as pretty.

thanks cala. One more questions, when do you usually get seedpods and when do you harvest seed?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

The white ones make pods all summer and fall. The double blue is more finicky, it makes a few pods in the spring, and more in the fall, but still not as many as the white and never in the summer(at least not for me, guess it's too hot)

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

So you grow them like an annual there, would I have enough warm weather to grow from seed to flower in one season?
Or just grow for the foliage.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

T-man, maybe if you started them inside, or I could send you cuttings(I think I need one of those "pay one price" boxes)

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

LOL! I have to start winking at the post office clerk here!!!LOL
I'll buy you a stamp machine!!LOL
Speaking of stamps they just announced on the news stamps are going to 39 cents January 8th!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Wonder if Priority will go up too?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I think it just did not to long ago, didn't it??
Remember when stamps were 3 cents???

The new leaves on those hibiscus are really pretty and taste wonderful in salads....the older leaves can taste a bit...slimey...but the young ones are wonderful....good done up like spinach too.
