Anybody out there happen to know the name of this one? The leaf is almost black and very smooth - not hairy except for the very edge. The center veins are white. The leaves are medium sized, lobed and loosely spiraled with a burgundy underside. The stems are light colored and hairy.

ID?
That is one beautiful plant but sorry to say I dont know the name...Judy
It resembles B. black velvet a whole lot, but not sure if that is what you have. ~Shirley
Is is B. 'Joe Heyden?' Love the sinus curl!

Actually, not sure if it's spelled Heyden or Hayden. Google returned more with it spelled with an 'a' but a look at the site
http://absastro.tripod.com/hkey/hsubkeys/halphakey.htm
brings it up with an 'e', not photo sadly.

In Mildred Thompsons book ( last word in begonia culture) it is spelled wiyh an a.She also states it is one of the easy large leafed begonias to grow.Does not reguire high humidity or freguent feeding.I've had mine about 10 years and the will get quit large
So Brucedean, does your's look like the one above? Do you have a cutting to share?
Yes mine looks just like that.I will be happy to share leaf cuttings in the spring. To cold now to send begonias thru the mail
Sounds great! Cheers,
L-
Thanks for your help everyone, but the pictures of Joe Hayden and Black Velvet are close but not quite right. Not enough sinus curl and the white veins are more prominent. Also, the dark color of the unknown variety is solid throughout and Joe and Black tend to vary slightly.
Don't you just hate plants with no names. Of course, we buy 'em anyway.
Being a responsible commercial greenhouse, we are obligated to put a name on every plant we sell. We hesitate to make names up - not the best policy. That's why so many plants these days have three or four different names. Very confusing. We try to track down the names wherever we can.
Thanks again and we welcome any more ideas.

Dave, If you like, i'll post it to the begonia group on yahoo. Just need your permission to use the photo. Come to think of it, you're probably a member of that group. Either way, I can ask there. There's lots of folks who know their stuff.
Go right ahead, Lali. We're not a member.
Thanks.
Posted it. I'll let you know if anyone comments. FYI for those interested in begonia geek talk, this is a great yahoo forum. Here's the link.

You have a beautiful plant. I hope you find name of it. :0) Thanks for sharing the picture.

Lali, OMG another Begonia forum? I just went there and subscribed but I can't see the photos that Ross posted - what am I doing wrong?
Generally you can only see them if you have the replies sent to your email. They don't show up in the forums. some of the photos are amazing. wish I could post them here but the ol' copyright thing, you know!
You just need to change your yahoo preferences to have the messages emailed to you directly.
Dave, so far, this is the only reply I have.
Aneita in So Cal says:
Laurie, that sure looks like my Begonia 'Black Fancy', a Dorothy Caviness hybrid. It's one of my favorite black begonias.

I am out of time today to google it, on my way to see the Rolling Stones! Woo Hoo! Will have to wait until tomorrow to find out what you think.
Thanks, Lali! You've been a big help.
I asked for permission to cross post her photo, but no response. I suppose that since she is posting it in another public forum, that she wont mind. If she says no, I'll remove the photo. Please note, the copyright is not mine it belongs to Aneita in So Cal. Thanks.
She states this
Here is a photo of my B. 'Black Fancy'. I had thought I'd lost it, when it showed up in this terrarium. I had stuck a piece of the rhizome in among the Selagenella (spell?) in hopes of saving it and had forgotten about it.
Your friend's plant is much nicer than mine is now. I'm going to give it a whole terrarium to it's self. It's pretty dry up here in the San Bernardino Mountains in California, during the winter, so some of these smaller Begonias need the added humidity of an enclosure.
Aneita in SO CAL, USA :o)
Lali,
It looks pretty good to us. I think we have a winner.
Thank you and thank Aneita for us.
