Question about fertilizing native Hibiscus

Kerrville, TX

I was visiting with a friend this afternoon and mentioned our little RU and gathering of gardeners and my friend asked me if I could answer a question for her.......Obviously I couldn't because I am here looking for an answer......She has several native hibiscus...one she called a dinner plate and she named at least one more but for the life of me I can't remember the names...her question was....what kind or type of fertilizer she should use on them and would they both require the same kind or would there be a possibility that she would need two different types....I think she is wondering if all hibiscus require an acid ammendment or an alkaline ammendment etc etc...

Are there any experts out there on native Hibiscus?

I have one remedy for everything, compost, compost, and compost. A little rotted manure would't hurt either, but I am not an expert, I just know what works for me.

The best non-natural fertilizers that I have used for hibiscus in containers are NutriStar Hibiscus Food and Green Diamond Hibiscus Food. Each are equally good. Green Diamond is much cheaper. The same type of fertilizer is used for all hibiscus. If the plants are in the ground, most prefer a slighthly acidic soil. The same fertilizers mentioned above may be used or I agree with Frostweed about adding compost and rotted manure.

I'm with Josephine....I also say you can't have too much mulch or bat guano....most of life's problems can be solved by more mulch and more bat guano!
