Thank you Zem...I will look both or them up and see if they look similar! Seemed like a very unusual blossom to me.

It's deff. a passion flower and a newer cultivar if I remember correctly. I've only seen it once earlier this summer and I promptly placed it on my "Must Have" list. I'll try to find my notes/photo of it for you. Please keep me in mind if you ever get seeds or cuttings off it for trading;)
Thanks, JD

JD...it is not my plant! I saw it behind a building I was visiting, in the parking lot! Sorry, if it was mine, I would share it ! Unless....NO, I can't get a cutting from it !!! :-) Maybe in the spring, I could ask and get one. I will let you know.

That's it! I had that odd name on the tip of my tongue and couldn't spit it out for some reason.

I'm always "borrowing" cuttings from corporate settings when I see a must have. Individuals gardens deserve respect like you showed. I've never been turned down when asking for a cutting luckily. Most folks are usually honored when you admire a plant enough to want a piece, I'm sure there are huge exceptions to these people sadly. Thanks for locating and photographing it, I'll find and aquire 1 someday soon I hope.

Margie, they have a HUGE one at the arboretum in SF if it is P. mollissima.

If you are thinking of buying one, you might want to look at Passionflower 'Donna Brigham'. Sue and I both bought one of these for about $6 a few months ago from Berkeley Horticulture. I think it is prettier.

I grew this one from seed sent to me by a friend in Brazil. It was a very good grower, and after the second year of growing it, I got buds during a cool June-Gloom two-week period. Unfortunately, they all dropped when the weather became nice, and the vine was removed soon after. It is a cool-weather passiflora and will drop its buds in warm weather. It is a huge grower and is considered invasive in warm-weather areas. Here are a few links:

No wonder it loves it here, Clare where it is cool. And it does smother other plants. Totally covers them.

Sounds so scary on your links where I read:
" forms a dense canopy, and smothers vegetation, fences, forests, pastures, and farm land. Initially introduced for ornament and fruit, P. mollissima has become one of the worst forest destroying weeds in the Hawaiian islands, covering thousands of acres of forest ."

Hi Kell! Your flower is so beautiful! Since yours is a named cultivar, it may have more desireable characteristics than some of the other wild forms. You are right it does sound kind of scary. It's scary how vines can kill trees by smothering them. I'm sure if you keep on top of yours by pruning it, it won't get out of control. I said that about my perennial morning glory vine a few years ago, and even though I pulled it up after a short time of growing it, I'm still not able to get rid of it!

I know that morning glory, it roots everywhere it touches down. It covers houses.

Here is P. mollissima covering lots of trees in the Arboritum in San Francisco.
