How long is a cats memory?

Nemo lived for the first year and a half of his life in an apartment. Mid-February of this year he came to live with us.

Sam came to live with us just after Thanksgiving of 2001.

When I visited the vet the other day I asked if anyone there had an idea of how long cats remember. No one had an idea. Have any of you here at DG an idea of a cats memory? It would be interesting to know if they ever reflect on their past lives.
