do you grow alliums, if so what varieties? thanks for your help

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

well, nobody said anything so I just HAD to go find out on my own. Lowes had their bulbs at 1/2 price so I bought 5 alliums (I think they are giant pinks) to try out in my yard.

If you have grown these in Houston area, pls let me know. thank you.

Hey Nery!

What do they look like? Do you have a picture? (I guess I could check the PlantFiles, duh!)

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Oooh! Okay, now I know. They're very pretty, let me know how they do for you (please).

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

hiya maggie. they are allium giganteum, pink/violet color. The Bloomingbulb website says they're hardy to 9 so I should be OK. For $2/ea I'm willing to experiment

Be sure to take pictures, I just glanced at them on the PlantFiles, and they are very pretty!

I haven't grown any here but have known people that have. I think they did good (looked good to me when I saw them blooming! not sure if they reliably returned but at half price--it's worth a try!).

A lady who live across the street had them several years until someone bought the hose and did away with them.

I haven't had luck with mine. Some have rotted in pots, others had leaves, but never any flowers.

For the record, I planted 3 from B&B, and leaves came up, but as soon as temps were in the 70's, leaves started getting crispy. I think houston is too hot for these. thank goodness I bought them bulbs on sale, not too costly an experiment.

Nery, are they completely gone? Sometimes if a plant is rated full sun, they do better in partial shade for us, so maybe you could move them to a shadier spot.
