What is the best plant medium to grow brugs? I'm new to this plant and just learning. I have some cuttings and also some rooted cuttings on the way to me and I need to know how to plant/care for them. Tell me your experiences.

When planting a rooted cutting.....??s
I put 7 cutting I bought off ebay into water for 5 days - changed water 3 times [ used bottled water ]
6 went into supersoil after nubbies? formed [5 days ] .
One is still in water . -7 days now - looks like I have 2 very short roots on it .Will probably put in supersoil later today .
I did finnaly fine supertrive - one capfull in 5 gallons of water from hose . I watered the ones in supersoil with it .
Dancey I use MG with fertilizer added, also put in some Peat Moss to make the soil lighter, give enough water but not too much or they get root rot.

this is a good thread. i use supersoil on my plants, too, and would like to try MG sometime.
Thanks so much for your replies. ;) I do have bottled water for the cuttings. I do have MG soil with fertilizer and some pearlite I can add. What is supersoil? I don't think I've seen that. Can you buy it at Lowe's or Wal Mart?

I think Supersoil is just a West coast soil Lin. I have used Supersoil for 30 years. But it just doesn't seem to have any zip anymore. If I plant just in that, my plants just sit there. Do nothing. Are any of you guys having the same result? I always used it for cuttings because it drains so fast but this last monthor so I am having so much rot. Maybe I just got a bad bag. I am now using other mediums i found at a hydroponics store to see if I have better luck!
Oh, I was wrong. It has grown!!

Dang, its not in Michigan..I will have to check it out anyway since the name is very catchy..lol...Judy
I just quit trying to find good soil, it's all the same here and usually wet, I hate it when it's wet, I don't mind wet mulch, but I hate wet potting soil. Wal-Mart in AL is the only one that carries it, shoot!!
I got some Jungle Growth from Lowes to plant my bananas in and it is a dry soil and fast draining, it contains soil, sand, compost and mixes & amendments.
Can someone tell me, do you think this may be a good potting soil for brugs? I haven't seen any gnats and like I said it is fast draining where maybe may help eliminate rotting. Does anyone else have any opinion on it?????? My bananas seem to really like it putting on leaves like crazy.

I spend more on soil than I do on plants. LOL. Well, maybe not. LOL. But I spend LOTS!! I use different mixes all the time. Whatever looks hot, I buy and add in to a basic mix. Then when I realize my plants are so happy in the mix, time has gone by and I have no clue what I added in.
I do know last year, my soil mix was horrible. It dried out in 1 day right from the beginning. I hated it. Recently, I have been going to a hydroponics store and buying what they have. They have so many fun things. It is truly much better than any nursery I have ever been to. And I have been to a few. It is SO EXPENSIVE!!! But I am splurging. Other girls splurge on jewelry, not me. Dirt makes me so hot. LOL
oh, kell. you are hilarious.
last valentine's day when hubby asked me what i really wanted, i said, "POTTING SOIL."
No thrills in diamonds, rubys or pearls
Gold does not touch me like other girls

Jungle Growth. Good idea! Thanks Linda. If I can't find Supersoil I can always look for JG at Lowe's.
Kell I do a lot of my own 'soil mixing' too. Trying to get it just right so there will be good drainage. I just want to be sure and get it right for my new brugs so they won't rot. I've read so much about them rotting.
Hey I totally agree with ya'll! I've got most of my family giving me 'garden stuff' for Christmas, birthday, and Mother's Day.

Dedda, too cute! I love it. I also buy vintage things galore, old crap. My Mom would always think I was nuts bringing in other people's used stuff. I love the idea it has a history and personality of its own! Anyway, I love old brass hendryx birdcages from around the turn of the last centrury, 1900. I told my mother about one excitedly that I had found, she was actually mad at me and said why can't you love shoes like I do! LOL Shoes do nothing for me at all! LOL
PS Lin. Do not worry so about rotting. It is the cuttings that can rot easily and then mostly in winter. I have never had a brug plant rot in the spring or summer. I can have problems in the winter but only because it is wet here then. So much rain and the air is actually heavy with moisture.
In the spring I pot things up with a heavy soil that does not drain so well because I hate watering all of them daily. Then I try not repot after August so the roots have a chance to fill the pot by winter. I use a much lighter mix then. For I want them to dry out fast. I do not want my plant sitting with a lot of wet soil around the roots when it is cold. Brugs hate cold and wet I have found.
Brugs are actually very easy plants. Not really fussy at all.
Speaking of gifts, I always request gift cards from H.D. or Lowe's. sure helps in the Spring time.
That is a good idea Petunia! I love gift cards. ;)
Kell I guess what I'm most worried about are my Brug cuttings. I have them in water now trying to root them. Those are the ones I hope don't rot. I'm changing the water every day. Sometimes more than that.

I bet they do fine. If they start going south, cut off the bottoms and pot them up in small pots with fast draining soil and put in light (not direct sun)! I have my windowsills lined with cuttings right now.
And if you lose them, try again in spring. They root so easy in spring. I root them outsdoors then. Now I root them indoors under lights rin windows because it is so wet outside.
