Hoyas macgillivrayi, imperialis, and megalaster

Shenandoah Valley, VA(Zone 6b)

Today I received my first hoyas from Asiatica. I ordered macgillivrayi, imperialis var. rauschii, and the megalaster. Of the 3, I believe my favorite is the macgillivrayi....but that's just from the leaves and the plant itself.

I'm sharing a few photos so that all of you seasoned hoya-lovers and experts can tell me if I received 'good quality' plants, as I'm a hoya-newbie. Each plant appears to be healthy and seemingly ready to be repotted soon. Single hoya plants were in each of the baskets, no multiples and no multiple vines (those had been cut, probably for resale with their cuttings offerings). New, green tips were on 2 of the 3 hoyas. One hoya tip was dried and split. I assume this plant will re-vine from the previous leaf-pair. ( Is that correct ?)

I took pics of the hoyas and of the 3 other plants that I ordered: Cyrtosperma johnstonii, dischidia ioantha, and dischidia ruscifolia. The dischidia species are quite different from each other but I like both very much.

The Cyrtosperma was a disappointment due to the condition of the plant received ( a number of holes in each of the 3 leaves, indicating probable bug chews). This plant is similar to Alocasia (the Elephant Ears plants), so foliage is the focal point. Well, the plant I received was one sad looking, chewed plant. But, I will keep it and nurture it and hopefully it will grow better foliage in my greenhouse.

Asiatica has a pretty good website to order from. The company packed each plant very well, and their plants arrived safely and on-time. Also, the company did provide an email notice on the day of shipment. I appreciated that.

This hoya, Hoya macgillivrayi, is sitting in a suspended ceramic pot. It has not been repotted but the vine was long enough that it needed to be wrapped to photograph the entire plant sent.

Hoya megalaster (with a damaged/crumpled leaf). What you see is what I got....This vine does not have a fresh, green growing tip. I assume new growth will branch from a previous node area, but don't know if that is how a hoya grows. (Enlighten me!!)

My experience is that you would have had to cut off the new growth tip anyway to let the plant supply its' energy to the roots instead of new growth. Your plants look terrific!!!

Here are the other plants I received: Hoya imperialis var. rauschii, Cyrtosperma johnstonii, Dischidia ioantha, and Dischidia ruscifolia. I love the Dischidias and will definately get more of them soon.

The Hoya is sitting inside a ceramic pot and the vine is long....I wrapped it around all of the other plants I received.

The Dischidia ioantha is particularly interesting because of the aerial rooting structure that has formed behind the leaf pairs. I assume this vine can be cut just below this rooting area for a new plant. It reminds me of the keikis that can sometimes form with the Phal. orchids.

Really nice Dischidias, Lynn. I am getting hooked on them too and just got a variegated form of the D. oianthe.... Gotta check Asiatica out...

Carol, thanks for the encouragement.

I went to the Aloha site. OHMYGOSH!!....I'm in even deep doo-doo now.....
LOL

Yep Lynn watch out for Aloha, that site should have a warning sign " browse at your own risk".

I think they look pretty good, but dangit....too bad you didn't know about Alohahoyas first!
You'd likely have received (at least) the same sized plant for less $.

Bummer about the Cyrtosperma. I wouldn't hesitate to let him know that you're keeping it, but you're not happy with it.

Do you have other Cyrtosperma? I've heard of them but have no experience with them. Just curious what they're 'like'?

I cruised Asiatica's site...couldn't find any information on shipping. Didn't find any new Dischidias there, Lynn....but Harry Witmore at Cloud Forest has the best collection I know about...and is really inexpensive....I think.

In my opinion Alohahoyas's plants are on steroids. They are excellent, also the shipping works out much cheaper!!! Good luck Lynn, your in trouble now!!

Nan, I know very little about the Cyrtosperma, but I love the foliage and hope I can make it 'happy' at my place. Yeah, too bad I didn't know about these Hoya Forum vendors, but there's always next week and the week after and the week after that.....And then Christmas, then my birthday, then Valentine's Day, then Mother's Day.....and all of the weeks in-between....

Carol, the shipping for my 6 plants was $18.90 for Priority Mail, signature required at time of delivery. I don't know the weight (didn't check) but the 2 zipcodes were: From 17339 in PA to 22655 in VA, if that helps. Their packing was A+, too.

As for my personal opinion on shipping, I would rather pay more to have the plants arrive quickly and undamaged than to scrimp on postage and receive unhealthy plants.

New vendor names keep coming up. Looks like I have a WWW-road trip in order.

:-)

lol!! That's right...lots more chances up and coming!!

I understand your thoughts on the postage....I guess it could have been worse, (though that sounds like a lot, to me) but you *did*, indeed, get some nice plants, there!

I'm partial to Dischidias, too, and Carol's right about Harry....nice cuttings, inexpensive.....but I've found some Dischidias to be difficult to root (that might just be me, though!)

Don't forget to check your Home Depot once in a while....they often surprise us with nice large pots of Hoya and Dischidia!

That Cyrtosperma has me 'intrigued'....I'm off to do some research!

Keep us posted on your plants' progress!

I was planning to grow it as I do the Alocausia and Colocasia, meaning partial shade and wettish/damp soil.

Here are a few quick links that I just located:

Over in the Tropicals Forum, there is an Aroid thread that mentions a diff. Cyrtosperma species. If this plant intrigues you, check out the photo of the guy holding a leaf that is rather large! WOW....

Actually Lynn $18.90 for six plants priority isn't bad all all. You could pay more than that for less plants, depending on the shipper.

Ya, I agree, that is a good price. Did they change their shipping policy. I remember it used to be a base fee of $25, depending on what zone you were in and that was for just two plants!

Myrtle Beach, SC

Someone please post alohahoyas web site ....please:)))
Thanks so much,

Hey, Lynn....I've been to that thread!!
Brian has incredible plants....and he travels far and wide and sees more than I'll ever *dream* of!
Sounds like it's a good possibility for growing indoors. You'll have to let me know how yours does.....(be my guinea pig, lol!)

I perused Asiatica's website, and it *does* say that they've reduced shipping charges! (Now if they'd just reduce the price of that plant I covet....but I don't realistically expect that to happen...for good reasons.....*no one* else has that plant, and I've looked for years!)

I guess,(after I really thought about it) if your plants were good sized, that's not too bad.

Great collection, Lynn! I'm always drooling when I check out everyones hoyas. Carol can you post the url for Cloud Forest, please.
:) Donna

Thanks, Carol! No wonder I couldn't find it since I was googling for Cloud Forest....lol.

Now Carol how can I drool over something I can't get when he doesn't even have most of his Dischidia in stock....lol.
