Hello friends.
I have 2 different Salvia's that I just love and would like to grow next year. I can't seem to locate seeds or the seed pods for the life of me. I feel like such a meathead for not knowing where to look. LOL
Could anyone please tell me where I should be looking on this plant? I would greatly appreciate it. I know the seeds are very very small or so I'm told, I just can't seem to locate any.
Thanks so much, JD
How do I find Salvia seeds on the plant?
the part that holds the flower to the stem will be where the seeds are. once the flower starts to die watch it very closely as there is nothing holding the seeds in and it turns brown. they will be there. i hope this helps some.
Thank you so much! So that funnel shaped thing holds the seeds huh? I thought that was where they would be located but since it's open as you describe, I didn't think I was right. I hope I can get to a few tonight, our 1st real freeze is forcasted for early morning.
Thanks again;)

Here a nice pic http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/39787/
I have a related question. I have some salvia seeds I want to harvest. However, I'm wondering how hard they are to germinate. One web site I read mentioned difficult germination and needing to use some type of acid to improve germnation.
I'm just curious how likely I am to be successful at growing salvias from seed.
shoot i have salvia seeds popping up each year where i didnt plant them. just depends on the type. they come up on their own. i just scatter them where i want them but i always seem to get ones out the box and have to transplant each year.
i have a red one right now thats in front of my porch. how it got there only it knows as i would never plant one there. hehe

Thanks so much for posting that link! Both my red and black/blue Slavia's have a few blooms left on them. Hopefully I'll be able to find some seeds in there somewhere too. I think I'll grb a large bag and put the whole top of a plant in there rather than risk shaking them all out on the ground. I have so many different seeds I need to harvest more of. It's getting out of control around here, paper bags laying all over the place and so unorganized. LOL Atleast I have them, I can always pick up later.
Thanks again all, JD
You are welcomed.
Tell me, are black/blue Slavia's funnel shaped things (ovaries) falling on the ground before the seeds are ripe? My plant did that all summer, I couldn't understand why.
One great way to save time collecting falling seeds is to put your pot over a tarp, or a flat surface where you can pick them once they are on the ground, easy and fast!
I, too, was waiting for seeds to appear on the black/blue salvia but nothing appeared. Yesterday while doing the final fall clean-up, I pulled up the plant and guess what? TUBERS! My first time with the black/blue salvia, is this normal? The only other salvias I've grown are the Victoria Blue Salvia and the red salvias that are sold as annuals everywhere.

NO! DON'T TELL ME THAT NOW!!!!
It's a shame, if I knew i would have kept the tuber, I should have looked.
Thanks, you showed me not to trash to fast, to explore before discarding a plant.
HMMM I've never heard anything about it being cultivated via tubers. I can't wait to hear more about this, hopefully someone here knows for sure. It maybe a question worthy of a new topic/thread, I'm sure you'd get a quicker answer and more people would see it;)

Hmm... That looks just like a dahlia tuber.
Maybe you have a miracle plant... hehe... The top looks like a salvia, but the bottom looks like a dahlia. I have a similar salvia growing, but I've never dug it up to look at the root system. Maybe there's some salvia experts out there who know what it's supposed to look like.
Heard that Salvia patens makes a bulb http://seeds.thompson-morgan.com/us/en/list/full-index/s/2 but did not no about any other salvia.

That pic of the tubers is the craziest thing I've ever seen! LOL Thanks so much for plucking it up and photographing it. I'm going to try to pull mine up today and see what happens. I can't do any wrong IMO as it's dead meat if I leave it be. If mine looks the same, I'll tag it and put it with all my other bulbs/tubers etc...
Man this storing plants in tuber and cuttings form has gotten entirely out of control here and it just gets bigger every year. We always tell ourselves we'll just deal with everything come fall when ever we find a new plant. Now, not only do I desperately need a green house, I now need a full tilt root cellar as well. Goodness gracious, this is never ending...

I hear ya JD! I sure wasn't expecting to get tubers from salvia but there they were. My DH thought they were potatoes! I am so curious to find out if you will have the same results.
I have 4 rubbermaid buckets full of cannas that we dug up also. Geesh, I only planted a few rhizomes and now I have tons more and they're BIG. We have a small house with a basement that's crammed full as it is. Trying to find someplace to keep this stuff is getting harder and harder.
Please be sure to let us know if your salvia has tubers too. I'll be waiting in anticipation!
Toni
Toni, Our house is incredibly small too. Just like you, we started off with a few canna's and elephant ears. They have multiplied beyond anything we could of imagined. We've discovered a bed on the South side of our house that stays very warm and many canna's and EE's live through our harsh if kept there. We re planted all canna's there as there would be no way to store them all indoors over winter, there are just to darn many.
I can't believe the lengths we go to in keeping these plants, it's out of control.
I haven't dug up that salvia yet, the weather has been crappy and we're busy with so much other stuff. I'll let you know as soon as we get to it;)
