I have been thinking of getting a Brug but really don't know the best plant to learn on. The color does not really matter but I would like it to have fragrance. Where should I start?
Which is the best Brug to start with?
Frosty Pink.....
Good Luck, as I am new to these beautiful plant, too!! :-)
Very good choice LucyGoose, grows like a weed for me too.
That CG blossom is really very dark orange and the pic was taken a couple of days ago, I don't have a clue why it looks that color, but it's a wonderful, easy to grow, beautiful, fragrant girl...
I started with 'Charles Grimaldi' and glad I did. He is just the most wonderful scented Brug, and so easy to grow. Tough as nails, too. Then I was lucky to receive a 'Frosty PInk'.......my first plant trade ever! I rooted every cutting and that's when I really became hooked.
Both of those are great for the beginner.
If you would like a cutting of 'Charles Grimaldi' to try, i'd be glad to send you one. You can Dmail me.
~Dawn (mamabirrd)
mamabirrd, what color is your CG?? My photo does not do mine justice, she is a dark orange, and smells like heaven. I'm going to get a new digi and this one is not old!! BTW, Susie, Calalily, sent me my cuttings and every single one rooted and all will bloom this season. Thanks, Susie, I REALLY love her and her foliage is lovely too!!!
WOW, they are beautiful, so very pretty and healthy!!!! Dr. S hated here, too hot/humid for her, I never saw a bloom...
Dan,
Your cutting of Dr.Seuss is rooting nicely.Thank You again,
Brigitte
sherry, those are abosolutely gorgeous close ups! love the dark dramatic background. i think i will paint tonight!
dan, wow on those blooms.
Thanks, Moonglow, it was via accident, I'm an awful photog, I took it early in the am before full light and it was cloudy too and my digi color is NOT true, CG was much prettier than that color - I expect her to bloom again but I bet she will be light as we get closer to the first hard freeze, which I HOPE doesn't happen for a month, longer wouldn't bother me either, but, I would take some rain, if you would please pass some my way, lol!!!
You guys it is totally amazing the difference in color. Like from Kin's. Remember his? They were a yellow gold.. I think he got one of his CGs on the calendar.
Did he tell you? He got 2 of his pictures on. Just great.
Anyway, his sure is not the color of yours. But I am sure the difference is the weather with him being on the west coast.
Anyway yours are gorgeous.
Jeanette
Thank You Dan for the offer but if it dosnt like heat and humidity its going to hate it here! Has anyone had success with Dr. S in the South zone 9a?
I would love to have it if it will look that good here!
Thanks
~Caren
Jnette, my CG above was orange/gold in the photos above, I do not have a clue why it turned out that color in the pic, grrrrr. BUT is was a BEAUTY, truly lovely with foliage to match, serrated and very dark green and healthy. More the color of the darkest area on tonyjr's photo, except mine was solid in color. tonyjr's appears to have been taken in a lighted area and mine was taken in almost dark. She is one of the prettiest blossom's I've seen, IMO as pretty as Susanne because CG's foliage is special too................Dr. S does not like the heat/humidity in South Arky zone 8a, but obviously she loves Dan's magic zone 5a, wow!!
My Dr Seuss, Isabella, Kyle's pink and Frosty were my firsts. I got all of them at the same time. They were all beautiful and fragrant this year. Isabella threw off 4 stalks at once. 2 "y" and bloomed at 3 ft and 2 bloomed at over 7 ft. I just love her, though her scent is not strong is it very nice.
I would love a cutting of the "real" CG.
Margo
These are from a limb I cut to send cuttings to a friend.

Heavinscent,
You shouldn't have any trouble growing them in the shade. I know many people that do. I would be happy to send you a White (Snow White) & Pink (Frosty Pink), Gold (Dr. Suess) for postage. These are easy to root and grow.

Margo which one is the 'real' CG?? Do you have a photo?? The flower in your post looks very similar to CG except the color - is that what you mean?? If so, could it be the weather or cutting her before she got all her color?? She is very pretty whoever she is...
Hi Sherry,
The flower in this thread is my Isabella. I have posted pictures of my Dr Seuss in other threads, though. My Dr Seuss is a darker golden yellow than the ones shown in this thread. I would love a CG (Charles Grimaldi) that throws the orangy shades. I am in Zone 8 on the Coast and Dr Seuss did very well for me this year. I am sorry for the confusion.

Now don't laugh since I'm so new. I think I have a CG.......starts off light yellow, then to peach then to golden yellow. Does this sound like Charlie? Blooms are done so I can't take a photo. If this sounds right, Margo, I'll bring you cuttings in a couple of weeks. A wonderful fragrance in the evenings!
emily, beautiful photos of CG. i hope you didn't lose him to frost.
Hi emily! Your CG is very pretty! What is your temp and is your photo recent. I cannot get over all the colors of CG. Mine is my very first bloom. My bloom was hidden under her foliage and I was drawn to her by her heavenly fragrance, i'm not sure how long she had been open when I found her, but she was not striped and she was orange/gold, an absolutely beautiful color and she has dark green serrated foliage. I'm going to see if I can find another photo with more light, so you can see her foliage better.
Gee Barbara, I think there are so many lookalikes now, it is almost impossible to know for sure which it is. Generic yellows are being sold all over now. Seems like the basic 3 are yellow, Frosty like Pink and a white. None have their real name attached if they have a real name.
Welcome to the fun world of brugs, Caren! Barbara too! And I am glad Kathleen is no longer a lurker. LOL.
WOW Dan, you brugs look so good. And I see you are using those tubs too. They seem to be a good size. What a great sight.
I personally would go with whatever brugs you can get Caren, and try them all. It seems to me from reading these threads for awhile, that there are no hard and fast rules with brugs. Some people have better luck than others with different brugs. I think there are so many variables in growing them, even the color sometimes is not stable from one yard to the other.
You might want to go for ones that seem to be the most bug resistant. I think mites for newbies and oldsters alike is the most frustrating thing growing brugs. Though that may be variable too from yard to yard. Most brugs are pretty easy and most flower pretty well. My CG gets mites easily! I do not know if Frosty does.
My CG photos are from this summer. I have a couple other brugs blooming, but not any CG's. Haven't lost any of them to frost and have taken the smaller one down into the basement.
I have to agree with Kell about mites. Mites do seem to love CG's, but I've found other brugs attract bugs more, like my EP. What kinds of brugs seem to be the most bug resistant?
Oooooh, don't tell me that about CG, shoot, she's been perfect so far. emily, do you leave any of yours in the ground?? Except for some exceptions that are known bug magnets, you sorta have to try them yourself, or I did. This year, Katrina blew Western Flower Thrips here and we had never had them before.
I did find mites on my CG during the summer, but was able to easily get rid of them on that brug. No leaves or buds were dropped on that her at all. I still highly recommend CG. So easy and not picky.
I didn't put any in the ground since we have such a long wet season here that I was afraid they would rot. I don't think they could take being rained on from Oct through June.
What kinds of control methods do you use for Thrips? They are bad here on my daylillys. I use Bayer but can it be used on Brugs?
My word, finally something I know about - Heavin, I'm a thrip 'expert', we were invaded by Western Flower Thrips, blown in from OK following Katrina. I took samples to three county agents and got three different answers. So, I went where I should have gone in the first place, to my guru, who knows 'everything'. He took one look and said WFThrips - and gave me this recipe, for QUICK action:
Yi Yield Thiodan - for quick results, 4 tablespoons to 1 gallon water
Mountain Dew Code Red (only) 1/2 can per gallon
Mix and spray.
I will tell you right now that the Thiodan is much easier to locate than the Code Red.
I sprayed immediately and blooms do NOT like it and everything I had was in bloom and their flushes were lost, in a flash, broke my heart, but the buds, leaves were not bothered and the next flush was glorious and long lasting and they've been blooming ever since.
The Code Red, used to be Cherry Mountain Dew. It is used to attract the thrips. The thrips upset me so badly that I bought enough stuff for 40 acres of cotton and I never had to mix but one gallon. He did tell me that they might return in the spring and he said when I pot up to use Hi Yield Di Syston on everything in a pot and in the ground.
Thrips don't like it cold, so they disappear, they do like heat, so they have to be nipped in the bud before they get going in the spring. I'd like to know if you try this and the results.
Emily, those are beautiful pics of your CG. It's on my "gotta have" list now.
Question.. what are the purple flowers just to the left of your Echinacea in the CG pic you posted at 12:55 Nov 10? They are gorgeous.
Barb
Barb, those are Canterbery Bells and they bloomed for me all summer long. I wish they were perennial instead of biennial. Here's a link to them in the plantfiles: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/38/index.html
Let me know if you'd like a CG cutting for postage.
Well SherryL, That is quite a Potion!
I have never heard of code red soda but I really dont drink soda. I will keep an eye out for it.
Thanks for the recipe
~Caren
Thanks Emily, for the response and the link. I'll have to check them out. And thanks for the offer of the GC cutting. I found that I have one coming from another generous poster here, so I will decline for now. That is one gorgeous plant!
Barb
