When it gets cold here in Central Illinois and that furnace runs and runs and runs, the air can get so incredibly dry...which (as we all know) is NOT good for hoyas. I have found a way to keep my hoyas in a nice, humid environment. What a deal for a mere $20! Got it at Dollar General (which is alot like Big Lots, Awanda!). The plastic cover has zippers on each side of the front flap which can be lifted to allow for ventilation. I've had my hoya starts in there for about a week and have already noticed they've greened-up quite a bit. I just LOVE finding a good deal.
Short of making sure I get some air movement in there.....I think this will help my hoyas thrive during the winter...what do you all think?
Thanks...Betsy
My new "HOYA HUT"
Hello Betsy,
I have a smaller version (table top size) of this same "greenhouse". I usually fill a pyrex brownie glass pan with water and pebble and put it under the last rack for added humidity. Be sure to change the water every so often but it seems to add even more humidity during the winter here in Maine.
GREAT find!
Good luck,
Kim
Betsy everything looks great! I use a small 3 inch electrical fan inside of mine for air circulation, attached to the middle wire on top.
Blessings,
Awanda
Looks fabulous.
Newbie? Not with that set-up, you look like you've gone pro! Looks awesome, keep us posted with the differences you see.
Heather
I love your name "Hoya Hut"...that is very cute. You have a nice microclimate for your plants and that's a nice setup. Before I had a greenhouse, I grew orchids indoors and learned that keeping my plants close together would add to the surrounding humidity. I would suggest a small tray with water and pebbles which would add extra humidity inside. And, of course, some air circulation with a tiny muffin fan to keep the air 'fresh'.
LCG,
Where would you get one of these tiny muffin fan, please?
Bets... great minds think alike! I picked up one of those last year and then when I saw a somewhat larger one at Lowe's, scarfed it up, too! You're an inspiration! Now that I've seen yours inside, I am going to move mine inside and put the cover on and use is as you have used yours.
Thanks for the pic... nice setup, for sure!!
Barb
Thanks all. The little fan is a great idea! I will get one this weekend.
Barb - glad to "inspire" you! Post pics when you get yours drug inside, k?
I have had my eye on a larger one at Menards...but won't buy it until/unless it goes on sale. Keeping my fingers crossed.
oh, and Heather....I think Awanda "upgraded" my status not too very long ago so ~*~WhooHoo~*~*~* I'm not a "newbie" anymore.
(okay, technically, I really am) LOL!
The least expensive way to get a few muffin fans is to scrounge! No kidding! Ask for old PC servers because all of them must be cooled internally so that the temperature inside our PC 'box' doesn't overheat. If you can't scrounge for a few freebies, you can resort to calling some of the computer repair shops and ask if they have them up for sale. Once, I paid $3 for one. All of the others were free for the taking. Literally!!
I like those fans much better than the smaller plastic fans that are avail. on the retail market. Those are about 4-inches and even at the low setting, the breeze is too strong for many plants.
Happy scrounging!!

Lynn,
Thanks for the info, just happen to have a couple of "old computers" around. Just did not think about those 'type' of fans. LOL
