I got rid of gnats, and mites, now I have a different one that covers the leaf and looks like sand, I am using neem oil and a spray but keep finding them. I have already striped them of almost all the leaves.
BUGS, what kind?
KEEEELL, can ya hear me yelling for help. lol
I can't imagine what they could be. Not aphids? No pic, Doris?
Oh darn! I saw something like this on another site ... can't remember which one or what they identified it as.
.... Of all the things I miss, I miss my mind the most!!
LOL Mary, you and me both!! Odd how they just vanish suddenly.
not aphids kell and I tried getting a picture but can't get close enough so they will show, but they get very thick on the leaf and looks like it has been dipped in sand, like play sand. I haven't seen them fly or mover but they increase, the spray helps but still getting them
doris, sorry to hear that. anyhow, you said you got rid of MITES. how was that done?
i just noticed a MITE walking about the roots of my newly acquired brug - - - i'm sure it's NOT ALONE.
also noticed MOLD on the roots. what do i do?
THANKS!

Gee Annapet, I do not think you can see mites walk around the roots. LOL. A gnat maybe?? Then again young eyes see all! LOL Can you take a pic of the mold? I get some weird white stuff sometimes and I just scoop it off and let it the soil dry out more.
Doris, I have no clue at all. I think I will ask Susie if she knows for you.
Kell, I haven't a clue. If it's sand like, it's not scale, which is what I was thinking. The only thing I can think of that looks like sand is mites.
kell, i was getting a headache from laughing. the roots are a little exposed (miscalculation), and i had to check what a gnat is, btw. then what a mite may be. definitely the latter, but it was way too fast for me to shoot.
the mold is just short fuzzy white. i'm guessing from the trip. but can't explain the mite.
doris, i hope we both find BUG CURE.
so, can i just put more soil around the base? like a mound....or have to repot the whole thing?
thanks!
I think you are keeping it too wet. I know what I would do but since we have Susie's attention and she knows so much more than I do, lets get her back Annapet to give you professional advice.
Doris, too bad no pic. I am sure that would really help. Can you go to google and see if you can see a similar bug?
susie, please come back!
kell, i've only watered it when i potted up the plant the other day. (has anyone tried a creme brulee torch to zap mold?)
LOL Annapet, NO!! But if you make creme brulee, I am so there.
OK I still do not know the name of the bugs but I took the leaf to our local florist, they told me they are in the aphid family and to use soapy water with oil mixed in, we can't get neem oil here so I got this. I mixed up a 1/2 gal jug. 3 tbs of oil, 1/4 cup of dish soap and filled with water. it killed them, did it for three days, 4th day no bugs. keeping fingers crossed and mixture ready
Ah aphids!! There are all different kinds and colors of them, Doris. I think every plant has an aphid specific to it. LOL
I use with great success, water with a few squirts of Palmolive in it. Kills them dead. In fact I need to get going for on some of my hibiscus I have tons of aphids. I am bringing them inside soon for the winter and sure donot want aphids all winter. .
Annapet, I do not know if you got an answer for the mold but there is TONS of mold, mildew here and there is a spray for mold/mildew it's a fungicide, miticide, insecticide, I have several and swap them around, all work. I've also used H202 recently on sedum and it worked great, fixed it right up. Only thing is that I cannot tell you a strength to use - I didn't care if the sedum made it or not, I was just checking to see if the H202 worked and I didn't measure. I would use either one of them in the early morning or late afternoon.
Joseph, I have something that is laying eggs on my brugs, I think its some kind of scale. It also makes a white "mold like" stuff on the leaves. I put a picture on Garden Foes forum. The "eggs" are in white fuzzy stuff, the "bug" is bright green and the mold appears on the leaves but isn't honeydew as far as I can tell.
BTW, I've sprayed with Merit, Neem and Pyrethrum.........no success with either chemical. I've been battling this pest for almost a year.
Gerris Iam happy to say I no longer have the bugs, seems the oil, soap and water worked, but if they come back I will send you a leaf.
calalily,
Is the insect stationary, or will it jump when you disturb it? Is the white material hard, or is it fuzzy? Can you flake a few off, put in a pill bottle and mail to me? What plant parts is the pest on, leaves mainly or on the stems?
Glad you don't have any more bugs, Doris...they can drive you nutso. I have a Podranea shrub I got in a trade earlier in the year, and when I brought it in this fall to overwinter it, I noticed soft scales all OVER it!! I was appalled, and cut the shrub right down to the ground of the container. I will then treat the stubs and with hopes will have conquered this pest.
Joseph
Joseph, the material is soft. When you pull it apart it's like little pink beads inside. The plants that have it, have it mostly on the leaves. I think it's scale, I've seen green scales on the plants with the white things, but not on all. We're right in the middle of citrus country, so no telling what the wind has blown in.
I will scrape some off and send to you.
The leaves with the white clumps also have white on the leaves, but its not the same as the white clumps(did that make sense?) Its almost like mildew, but isn't. This has got me stumped!
Try spraying the leaves with a moderately strong stream of water to knock off the pests. They won't be able to get back on the plants. The fuzzy material is a barrier to pesticide spray, you almost need a systemic pesticide that will be absorbed by the plant through the roots to kill the critter as it sucks the brug sap. Try spraying it with water first, once a week and see if that helps. It will be tedious doing leaf after leaf, but it may be worth it to get rid of them. Pruning off of really infested sections of the plant may help control the infestation in combination with spraying with water.
I pruned off the heavily infested branches.(this started on a dutchmans pipevine) and I've been spraying with water, not every day though. It's been dark at night when I get home from work.
I sprayed with Merit over a week ago, it may be making a dent in them but its too early to really tell. I also squished a bunch by hand.
Since I am sick with the flue I have been reading my book "Terrific Garden Tonics" by Jerry Baker, I just read this Tonic for all bad bugs.
20 cloves of garlic
1 medium onion finely chopped
1 tsp. dishwashing liquid
1 tsp. of glycerin
1 qt.plus 1 gal. water
Place garlic, onion, and 1 quart of water in blender Blend at high speed for 1 minute, Strain the mixture through cheesecloth or pantyhose. Mix this with the gallon of water Add the dishwashing liquid and glycerin, pour into hand held sprayer, spray all your plants, it will send all your pests and diseases packing.
Worth a try.
Doris
Might send you packing too! LOL. You try it first Doris and report back!
kell now would be a good time with this flue and cold I can't smell a thing.
Doris, I'm addicted to garlic, and LOVE to smell it cooking, sauteed, etc. However, I purchased a similar Jerry Baker recipe at a charity bazaar and, it might have driven city bugs off but it had little effect on redneck bugs and the smell didn't work for me and I have Goldens that live inside and my aunt has a litter box, and I would put the garlic bug stuff and the litter-box in about the same category, with regard to odor, and, of course I wouldn't care what it smelled like if it worked well. I do love Jerry Baker, lost my book in a fire, but I wash my garden, re Jerry Baker, with soap all the time and really feel like it helps the bug situation...
I sure hope you feel better soon! Did you get yoru flu shot?
Kell they would not give me the shot because they said I had a mild fever, I felt fine, well two days later I had the flue, the cough is the worst thing just a dry hacking, and today my son has to have 3 stents put in and I can't be there, this was something else that came up unexpected. he just turned 51
Oh my. You must be having a terrible day and be so nervous. I will say prayers for him!! I know it will kill you but do not go near him. But if he catches the flu it would be terrrible.
I always try to get my flu shot in October, as early as I can. I think it takes 2 weeks after you get it for it for it to start to work. I know this year they were late getting a lot of the vaccine out. I would still get one Doris as soon as you are all better. It helps protect you against a few different kinds.
Today will be a long day for you. I am sure thinking of you. Please feel better soon! I bet your boy wants you near too. No matter how old you are you always want your Mom when you are sick.
Just want to report the Hospital called and my son is fine, they got all three stents in, your prayers sure helped kell. great that he has a loving wife that will make sure he takes care. now to get rid of this bug I got instead of the Brugs'
Good Doris. I am so glad. Try to rest up now.
