Wish list! who has them and what's on them??

Louisville, KY

OK well I am fairly hard to satisfy when it comes to plants I want. Most the new things I want are newly collected aroids and not yet named. As well as hybrids or forms out of Thialand for other crazed collectors like myself. When your as crazy as I am you list.
I have had old list a mile and a half long Now days the list stay around 50 or so plants but I always have a top 5. Well most on my list most people do not know exist names like cytrosperma culcasia podlasia and other odd aroids, many with out names just old pictures that seem to have no info. Their is one that really sticks out on my list that I have seen many people grow and for some reason I am never able to get a hold of one. That is the true canna Druban. Durban is not tropicanna with its orange flowers. Durban has red flowers a bit slower and taller. I have gotten it from ebay with pics only to grow out tropicanna as well as trades. Does anyone have this one?? I would be very interested in it. Another plant on my list is Amorphophallus maxwellii I have had 5 chances to get this plant by friends only to have someone get them first. Always a pain but heck I need a goal i guess. Last but not least is Philodendron spiritus-sancti I can probably get this but at the moment I don't have 1000.00 dollars or more to drop for it. I am sure I can think of more but most are obscure odd aroids on the far reaches of the earth. I figure to make this interesting I will add a pic of one of the plants I am currently hot on the trail of. I have been after some plants for more than 7 to 9 years. This one I have been after 3 years and am closing in on it fast. I hope LOL

I have found it online from a couple of places and considered buying it, but havent done so yet. The price is a little pricey, about twenty bucks. If I do buy it, I will be happy to send you some.

Casselberry, FL(Zone 9b)

I know I have seen it around online before. What is it called?

Louisville, KY

This photo was from Thialand. Were have you seen it?? This is not a blood banana. As fas as I know non are in the US and it usually sells for 500.00 to 1000.00 a plant. So if you seen it for 20.00 I would want to know lol.

Do you have a specific cultivar for it? Is it musa or ensete? We can hunt it down for you, but need to know a few 'minor' details!

Louisville, KY

Non on the links are exactly it. Their is ensete murellii some red on it and then zebrina some blotched red. The pic from Ty Ty is actually under the leaf. I should note that this company has a bad rep and I have been burned a few times by them. Many musa species have red blotching most species will lose this as it matures But this form seems to keep it till adult. Aparently much more red than any other known.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

somewhere along the line I've gotte confused. Are we talking about a red leaf canna or a red leaf banana?????

Louisville, KY

Its a red banana that I am after as well as Durban a canna that looks like tropicanna with red flowers. Sorry it is getting confusing.

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

wow brian you know how to tease me. Ill get right on it.

Jerry

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

bw, I was talking about the red Durban for twenty bucks, not the banana. I would really like to know which banana you have pictured. I have never seen one that red . I do have some that have a lot of red, but not that much. Moretz, I have chinese yellow bananas. I have a huge one which has about twenty babies around it. It grows differen t from regular bananas, so I am not sure how to seperate. I also have spiral ginger, but not the one you mention.

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

rylaff
i think you cut them from the mother plant like you do the other nanas but not sure and the ginger you're talking about what color is it? plmk and what you want to trade for them if trading? plmk and thxs

Casselberry, FL(Zone 9b)

Brian,
If you do find it, you have to let us know! You must! So we can get one, too... I know I still have found it somewhere and I have been digging around, but I think it will be one of those items that you find only when you stop looking for it.

On a different note, do you have any white cannas? My MIL told me that in Ecuador they have white ones. I still have to plan a trip down there and figure out how to come back home with all sorts of green things. I hate starting from seed but I may have to.

Louisville, KY

I have a hybrid white canna. Their is a species in equador aparently extremely hard to grow. I am very interested in getting seed of it. Aparently it has a good smell to it which is not seen in many cannas and could be extremely useful if breed into others.

Cool - when she goes back I will put in a request. I will see if she can send seed and/or plants. It may be tough because of Customs but I know that they are a major exporter to the US for flowers and plants, so it might be easy enough. I will keep you posted!

this is what i found out i hope this helps you:

gently dig the ground between the pups and the mother stalk. If there are roots, cleanly separate the pups. If not, wait an extra couple of months and reiterate the process!

thxs moretz

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Moretz, I will check out my pups and see if any can come off. They dont grow like regular bananas so I wasnt sure. Here is a pic of my spiral ginger.

interesting bwilliams, but I think mine is better

http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/92622/

I did buy canna Durban from Travena Cross nursery a few years ago, and it is extremely slow to increase. I'm not too sure about the red flowers, perhaps a brighter shade of orange, the leaves are the very colorful ones. I have two from splitting, but didn't get them repotted this year and didn't do too well, they get thru the winters in a cold greenhouse. It must have taken 3 years to be able to divide it. It is a nursery I would trust to be selling the correct plant. I also have Black Knight, and by comparison its a race horse to a donkey for increasing.

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

yes i got 200 total on the way i cant wait lol see ya soon

Jerry

Patumthani, Thailand(Zone 11)

bwilliams, In fact I would like to buy one myself. Since this banana's still very expensive, I decided to wait. I guess it will be about 1000 Bahts within a year or two or so. The show was already over a week ago, I do not know where I can contact the seller. Anyway there will be a number of plant show at this time of the year, I will keep you inform. I do not know chanrit or homes.

Honea Path, SC

I heard this banana will be sold in the USA this spring but limited. Not sure by who though. Brian if you get ahold of a source let me know...

Louisville, KY

I know of only one person with this plant in the USA. He recently got it and I doubt it will be in the trade very soon. Their is also a black form with dark stems and a yellow form. A few of my friends in thailand also showed me pics of about 4 new variegated bananas. The coolest one having red stems and variegated leaves. Kukiat you should look for Homes he has a very nice nursery I hear and is a good friend. He visits the USA a few times a year for plant shows. I will be very suprized if this plant hits market next year. But with TC who knows.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I have just been trawling thru jungleseeds, they have musa nagensium, with dark purple red pseudostems, could this be the black form? They also have a new species from India with violet flowers, both on my list

AnaM149! - I looked at one of the links you had listed above and found a ginger with my daughters name. I have a garden with something about each family member, but my daughter's name is Taira (pronounced Tara) and FINALLY I found a plant that has her name, it's one of the gingers!!! She'll be thrilled she finally gets a spot in the garden! I'm still looking for a Bohemia after Dark daylily, but found a Crown of Bohemia coleus, in honor of my dad who passed away this past year, and was Bohemian (Czech)
Thanks for the link! (And I really NEEDED a darn good reason to order another plant! )
