I'm travelled to Maine over the weekend and made plans to stop by Logee's Open House on Saturday! I know everyone complains about their prices but I couldn't resist. I can't remember the names right now of the five I bought - but when I get back to Virginia, I'll take pics and post them. So many little beauties and it was so hard to resist - but I did good. Walked away with five begonias, one Cissus discolor (I've been wanting this one forever!) and a variegated Clerodendron thomsoniaii. Unfortunately I didn't get there until late in the day - good news is that it wasn't as crowded as it was earlier in the day, bad news - some of the discounted plants were all gone. I'll be posting my new 'babies' when I return.
Logees Open House!
Green with begonia envy here!
WOW I can only dream. Have fun ! Allison
And where in Maine is Logees?...I was in Maine last year and never knew it was there..grrrrrrrr..Judy
juttz, it's actually in Danielson, CT - stopped off on my way to Maine - all are doing well, waiting for the trip back to VA tomorrow - 26 degrees here this morning - brrrrr.
susancva - I know about the Cissus but I couldn't resist. Probably the wrong time of the year to give this one a trial run, but hopefully I'll get it through the winter and can get it outside next summer with the rest of my Begonias.
Well that makes me feel alittle better that I didnt miss Loggees when I was in Miane..I did get to Freeport and went crazy in L L Beans..Im a huge tote bag lover and got myself some nice ones...
Now I need to talk my hubby into going to Conn....lolol....Judy
rcn48:Actually, my cissus discolor did great under fluorescent lights at work but went into demise when I took it home.
I see you're in Virginia so if you ever come thru Northern VA, you should make a point to stop at Merrifield Garden Center in Merrifield, VA (2 locations). They have all these rarer plants and I've seen the Cissus Discolor in 6 inch baskets hanging from ceiling to the floor.
juttz, where in Michigan is Muskegon? We travel to Charlevoix, Michigan every summer when the heat kicks in around here. FYI, if you ever make it to Logee's, don't make the same mistake I did. Since I was travelling from the south, I figured I'd bypass Hartford and head due east - wrong! It took me an hour and 15 min. from the time I left I-84 travelling through all the little towns (and traffic lights). When I left, I realized that Logee's was right off I-395 and only about 20 min from Worcester, MA. It would have been much easier to just follow my nose to Worcester and then drop down I-395.
Muskegon, is about 200 miles south of Charlevoix along lake Michigan..We go there all the time and actually was there about 2 weeks ago...we go to Traverse City in the fall to camp and go up that way to do a color tour on US 31..You should go up abit farther and see the Upper Penninsula...the big Mac bridge is really awesome to see and after you get off the bridge head to the nearest pasties store...lol..love those meat pies...
I probably won be out east for a long time..we did that vacation a year ago and loved it but once is enough for my husband...he wasnt as impressed with the New England states as I was..He loves out west....Judy
juttz, we actually made it to the UP this summer. We've tried several times but we're always "exploring" along the way (i.e. watching the ditches and edges of the woodlands for plants) so sometimes we don't make it to our destination. We will definitely be going back to the UP next summer though - we had a limited amount of time to spend there and we found some wonderful areas to explore that we need to go back to. Too bad your husband wasn't impressed with the New England states. The thing I like most about Maine is that you can be at the beach but only a two hour drive to the mountains! I prefer to stay away from the "cities" and travel up toward the White Mountains in New Hampshire and then over into Vermont - gorgeous country!
We went through Upper New York to get to Vermont via a Lake Champlain ferry..we went through Vermont and New Hampshire and saw those mountains..my husband prefers the Rockie Mountains since he thinks the White Mountains look more like our hills....lol...Ther terrain over in New England is alot like ours so the awe wasnt like out west for him..now Im with you on going the back roads and exploring..we never did get up north in Maine and this is where we would have seen more of the country...we did go to the beach once just to see the ocean but Lake Michigan is so much nicer...and like I said we didnt see alot of the shore up north where it would be more rugged..this is why I want to go back...love the lighthouses too...this fall I yearned to be back there fo the color but I guess Michigan has wonderful color too...Judy
Judy, definitely agree with you on "but Lake Michigan is so much nicer". I always loved the lakes in Maine where my family had a cottage, but after my first trip to Lake Michigan I was hooked and could care less about swimming in the lakes of Maine :) And yes, the coast of Maine is definitely "rugged" with few real "beaches" - a far cry from the shores of Lake Michigan. If you ever get back to Maine, check out Baxter State Park in northern Maine - it's a huge park with lots of roads and very few facilities but it's absolutely gorgeous (mile high Mt. Katahdin is the highest peak in Maine and if you're a hiker, it can easily be done in a day - there are other peaks that aren't as high but are much easier hikes). A great place to see moose, either in the many ponds or running down the road in front of you! We're determined to get to Charlevoix one of these years for the autumn colors, although it's hard to beat the outstanding reds in the fall colors of New England.
WOW! Dont see things like that out here! Beautiful!
Judy, that picture definitely belongs in the DG photo contest. It is beautiful.
Gosh, I dont know anything about the phot contest..I guess I should go search for it..I have this picture on my desktop..I just love it...Judy
juttz, here's the links to the photo contest in case you haven't found it: http://davesgarden.com/contest/2005/ , http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/555215/. I had so much fun looking at all the entries last year - maybe I'll get around to entering a few of my own this year!
That picture of the barn is incredible! The architecture of the barn is really nice - reminds me how much I miss the Cape style of the homes in Maine. But now I definitely have to go to Sleeping Bear Dunes - my husband has been trying to get me to go via his parents' boat. Seems like we never have enough time, plus the fact that I hate to travel on water unless I can see the shore :) Although we took the ferry over to Beaver Island this summer and it was an enjoyable trip. Here's a picture of one of our favorite finds during our back road travels - a wonderful old stone house!
If that stone house were located here in the Napa valley, it would go for about two million dollars as a 'fixer'! I'd kill for that place! Well maybe not kill, but you know what i mean. It's beautiful! Why in the world would it sit vacant like that?
Lali, I have no idea - all I know is that this year (we went back for more pictures) - we met the owner of the surrounding land (Mr. Clarence Boss - my husband started a conversation with him while he was sitting on his tractor and learned way more info than we needed, i.e. all about his heart surgery, etc :) He said that there were squatters in there several years ago and ever since then it's been abandoned. It's a shame, because the stone is absolutely beautiful! This is a pic of the detail that's evident around every doorway.
What a wonderful stone house..and looking at it I bet it could be fixed up and be standing 100 years more....Where was this picture taken?...I love it and thanks for the link to the photo contest..what the heck, I will enter it...and yes this barn was on the D.H Day farm...what you dont see is that there is a victorian house to match the barn and right past the barn going back farther are more outbuildings that are smaller versions of the barn...it is just the neatest looking piece of architecture....Judy
Judy, the stone house is located on Boss Road in Antrim County. If you're ever interested in checking it out, I can give you exact directions :) Would love to see more pics of the house and outbuildings with that barn if you have them - will definitely be looking for it if I ever make it to Sleeping Bear Dunes!
