CLOSED: anyone want some coreopsis 'moonbeam'?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

My coreopsis 'moonbeam' is taking over the garden again. We'll need to cut it back seriously. This plant began from a 'extra' tiny scrap that didn't fit in the whiskey barrel so we stuck it in the retaining wall garden. I'll send cuttings wrapped damp paper towels in baggies in SASEs. I don't know about planting cuttings at this time of year, but I'm sure they'll do fine. It looks like this: http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/61872/
Please post here if you are interested.

Sure, Sandy. Can you send me a SASBE, please? I thought it over, and decided they'd get squished in a SASE.

I can send a priority stamp for 3.85. if that would be better. LMK

Thanks

Would that be for a box? (Sorry, new.....)

Hi, Carrie!

If you have enough, I'd like some, too. I will send a SASBE (6"x9" is what I have on hand... is that o.k.?). I will enclose stamps and you can apply however many it needs. I just hate to stick on stamps only to find that it only really needed half of what I put on! I'm really new to trading, except for locally with friends/relatives. You can send the excess stamps back or keep them for your trouble, I just hate to stick them on and waste them when one of us can use them for something else.

Will they have roots or will I need to root them?
I'm in z7 and we're still (surprisingly) in the mid-upper 80's this week!
Thanks for your offer,
Gail

Hi Gail,

This is MY first time but my plan is to dig up what's there that's too much, divide it into three of four parrts, with roots, I guess cut back the foliage (maybe that's the first thing I'll do)... the short answer is YES it will have roots and probably dirt, too.

Trying to be helpful rather than critical here, but I've sent a few things out this year & learned as I went.... Definitely you don't want to use a regular envelope, as you don't want to send cuttings through the automated system. I sent mint cuttings in a SASBE earlier this spring, but mint is really tough, and I'm not sure if coreopsis is quite as rugged. You might be better off packing the cuttings in a little box -- I'd hate for them to get wrecked along the way after you went to the trouble of packing them up.

$3.85 will send up to 1 pound via Priority Mail, and if you go to usps.com and print your postage online, you get free delivery confirmation. There are also $3.85 stamps available for people to buy & send, but you have to pay extra (40 cents I think?) for delivery confirmation.

KimGaither has a great thread somewhere on packing plants for mailing, but here's the quick scoop on how I do it: The idea is to send your cuttings with moist roots but dry tops. Knock off as much dirt as possible, then wrap the roots in a wet but not dripping paper towel. Put just the roots & paper towel portion inside a plastic baggie, and seal it close around the stems with scotch tape or a rubber band. Press 'n Seal also seems very good for this, but one recent trader complained she had a hard time unwrapping it. Regular saran wrap generally doesn't stay stuck together well enough. Then wrap the upper portion of the plant (stems & foliage) in a rolled cone of newspaper, like wrapping flowers for the florist. Put your bagged & wrapped plants in a box with styrofoam peanuts or shredded paper to insulate them & keep them from banging around (slightly overstuffing the box is good). I used the same paper towel/baggie/newspaper method for those mint cuttings that were sent in a BE too.

Sorry to interrupt business here on your thread. Hope the info is helpful!

Thank you, critterologist, I have just been thinking through my options, and fainting at the size of the clump my DH brought in for me to divide!

Carrie,
If you like, I'll send the $3.85 + .40 ($4.25) and you can just send me a chunk if that would be easier for you. Would you still have enough for Sandy?

Oh, man, I have plenty for everyone and their three best friends! I'm going try to mail it all out tomorrow. You can send me the $$, ok?

HAS ANYONE GOTTEN THEIRS YET? I'm so insecure... I sent them on Thursday, but then Friday was a holiday, but Saturday wasn't? It's probably too soon.... I feel like the anxious father-to-be, pacing the waiting room....
