I received mine in a trade last year, and it's now blooming and absolutely beautiful, starting out yellow, then changing to a orange. Really pretty. I'd like to know who the parents are of this beautiful brug. Can anybody tell me. BEcause I can't remember who I got mine from.
Who's growing Big Yella
Looks like a Dr. Seuss to me. I have one. Yes, they start yellow and turn orange.
See the serated edges on the leaves? That is one sign of the Dr.
Gita
I believe either Susie French or Kell named Big Yella .
I'm sure one of them will be along ;-)
Big Yella came from me, Kathy. I just cut the mother one down a couple weeks ago! So Sad! It got so huge it was taking too big a place and I am doing a tropical spot finally after all these years! Ears, bananas etc.
Anyway, I bought that along with 3 others from the same place. All of them are a bit different though basically the same. Big Yella had different leaves from the others so it was my favorite from the begining. I have no clue who the parents are. The tag just said Brugmansia Suaveolens. I crossed the 2 in my yard and it took so I think they may have been grown from seeds. I bet Charles Grimaldi is a parent.
It is prolific and gets huge. Mine was in flower constantly, rarely a day with out a bloom except in the dead of winter. I have a couple standards of it in 20 gallon pots but they do not flower as profusley as the one I had in the ground. But they may do better next year, they were just younguns. LOL
Wel, Thanks for all the information guys. I really love it whether it's called Big yella or Dr. Suess.
kathy
kathy, the blooms are gorgeous.
I wonder where I got mine, cause I know I haven't ever traded with Kell yet.
I just can't remember. Old age I guess.
I have sent this out to so many people Kathy_ann, it has a life of its own now! LOL.
LOL, I hear you there.
Thanks for the help
kathy
Kathy, that is a beautiful flower! No wonder you are so fond of it.
Kell... WOWSER!!! :-O
Barb
yes it is georgious isn't it I do love it. I wish I had a dr. suess to compare it to though>
That is one that I don't have. LOL
kathy
well, I need a piece now! Perfect for my warm tropical colors. Love those huge blooms.
Well shoot Sue, you could have had a fat sucker of it before I cut it down. Didn't I give you a tall sucker for a standard of its sibling last month? You won't need 2 of these, they get so huge.
LOL, Sue do you have Dr. Suess? WE could Trade LOL, I'd love to grow the two of these together for a couple of years and see their similarities.
kathy
I see Kell posted the same time as me, Glad your able to get one Sue, It's quite a beauty. Mine is still small yet. That was it's first flush above there.
I don't have the Dr but if Kell says I have a good enough sibling, then I'll take her word for it! If it made it though. It has tiny baby leaves on it and they are not getting any bigger so far, maybe pouting from the cold? Sure hope it's actually rooting and not just a huge dead stick!
LOL Sue. Is it still green? I am sure it is rooting. If not we will try again. LOL. I actually like the plant you got a cutting from better this last year. The flowers were darker, never the lighter yellow Big Yella gets at times. Though it does not flower quite as much. I just took a pic yesterday of a flower on it.
What I like about this one is that it always has very green leaves. Charles Grimaldi you have to fight a yellow cast to them and they never are a deep green it seems. I do not think I have ever seen Dr. Seuss in person, I am trying to remember if I ever had it. I have never seen it for sale here.
PS I had never noticed what a fantastic calyx this one has. A real beauty of one!

Hmmm, yummy!!
Ok, I just went and looked. The big one I suspect is the pink one, (didn't tag them, darn) it turned brown from about a foot below the Y and up but there are tiny leaves coming out along the nodes of the stem. Should I just leave the brown now until the spring? The bigger stemmed one I think is the yellow, the Y has some browning patches but is still mostly green. It has tiny leaves along most of the nodes and at the Y notch but they look tiny and shriveled a bit.
Email me pics, Sue!
man, always putting me to work! Be right back...
kathy_ann, i keep looking back. i just love yellow.
sigh...my list is ever growing.
I was just out back and was so shocked to see the stump of Big Yellow still in the ground and it is sprouting again. LOL. Poor Tom. He must be having a terrible time. He has already dug around it almost 2 ft. deep. In the past the brugs have been so shallow rooted, it was a breeze to get them out. It figures this one would be a bear to get out.
It means its a healthy bugger....I got a cutting of big yella this year but cant rememebr who gave it to me..lolol....this brug is getting around isnt it?..lolol..Judy
WooHoo
Send it this way, Kell...LOL
i'm too short kell can't see me waving my hand!
lol.
I can't remember ever seeing a Dr. Seuss or Grimaldi seedling that looks so identical to its parent This one looks like Dr. Seuss to me. Maybe someone should try crossing the two.
Never mind

Kathy Ann! lol!
I hope everyone understands that it is not my intent to embarrass anyone or to prove anyone wrong about this particular brug. From reading past threads and other info about this one I can see that it would be wonderful if the mystery could be solved for sure. Kell's Big Yella pictures are gorgeous. Either she has the magic touch with Dr. Seuss (I've never seen a more beautiful Dr. Seuss ) or she grew a Dr. Seuss lookalike that deserves a place in brug history because it is an improvement over Hetty Krauss/Dr. Seuss/Rapture. It would be great if the mystery could be solved and everyone will feel comfortable to know exactly what they are growing.
last year was my first year to have a brug. didn't know there was a name for them other than "angel trumpet". I have kicked myself so many times after finding this forum, AFTER I dug mine up in the early Spring, not knowing that it would come back. I went to the nursery and bought two more. After reading so much info on this forum, I am learning about cutting and rooting, so I expect to have many more next year. I recently had someone dig up a row of large privet shrubs, so I can plant brugs there next spring.
I enjoy all the great pics and info on this forum.
I wish you all could be in my sunroom and smell the beautifull aroma comming from Big Yella, there is only the one bloom but it smells so strong, I opened the door to let it drift through to my computer room.
Welcome to our world Purplepetunia! You may regret it though. LOL. You know you have the brug fever when you start digging up beds.
