Remember when DG had the hibiscus co-op last winter/spring. I bought 5. Nice healthy looking starts. After weather warmed enough I kept them in my shade house over summer which really was a little too shady for them Actually 4 in the shade house, in 4" pots, The other one was planted in a 6" pot and out with other pots in full sun. It had several blooms , even tho not getting sufficient water at times. Moved all into the gh for Oct. then decided not warm enough in there, 50degrees most nights, and moved them here in the house to my plant room. All have buds, but only Hot Ticket, (the one in the larger pot) has bloomed. I will post a photo of a not completely open blooms.
How did the rest of you do with your hibiscus starts. Would love to see some photos. DonnaS

That is beautiful! Maybe you can answer a question for me. The size of the pot of a hibiscus only impacts its size (plant), and has nothing to do with flowering, correct? I think I may have potted up some hibiscus to larger pots, and maybe should repot them to smaller pots.
MythM, I am always leary of over potting. I am surely no expert on Hibiscus but think you are right a 4" pot for a starter should be large enough and shouldn't in my estimation make too much difference in the size of the bloom at least for a while. Mine are all in 6" pots now and I think that will be okay until spring.
Maybe some who is more of an authority will come along and give us both good advice.

Rutholive, I only repot in spring IF the plants new leaves are small.
These guys live a very long time so don't go to a big pot too soon or you will not be able to move it around in 10 years.
The first few years may be ok to repot each spring to a 2 inch larger pot, after that skip a year or 2 between re-pottings.

Thanks Andy, As I mentioned i did move mine into my plantroom in the house, It is a west facing room at west end of house. Have a set of plant shelves there that my son built for me more than 25 years ago. Have three aluminum trays that have the white vinyl??guards" for fluorescent light in the bottoms of the trays. I keep water in the trays all the time and set pots of plants on the top of the guards which keeps the bottom of the pot above the water. Does keep the humidity around 70% which works pretty well. Also mist the plants each morning.
