CLOSED: Cat's Whiskers, beautiful and unusual

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

I have two very large Cat's Whiskers plants. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/2085/index.html
A lovely and unusual plant. I got them at Gwinette Technical College Plant Sale this spring. Anybody want to trade?

Casselberry, FL(Zone 9b)

Thripmaster,
Please take a look at my journal and see if there is something there that catches your eye that I can trade you with...

Thanks! Ana

You have plenty of things on your trade list that I don't have. What do you have extra of that is easy to divide and ship? Especially your daylilies. I don't have most of the ones you list.

OH PLEASE,

I would love to have this plant!! I saw it in Hawaii last month, for the first time and have been asking here at DG for it.

I have a Salvia "Coral Nymph" and Trumpet Lily "Black Dragon" that are on your wanted list. I also have a nice Red Amaryliss bulb...large one. hehe

Please let me know.

OK. I'll close this thread and send one to SoCal and the other to AnaM.

Donna, I would love either of the two things you are offering for trade. Please send whichever is easiest for you to part with and pack/divide. The plant I am sending you is HUGE! About 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide. I think it may need some trimming to get it shipped. If it arrives a little bald, don't panic. I think these guys are pretty tough and should bounce back nicely. The only requirement I have read about them is they like sun and to not ever completely dry out. I grow mine in sun with some afternoon shade and make no special arrangements about water. It gets water when it rains or if I decide the whole garden should get some. It has done just fine.

Robin, thank you so much. :-)))))))

Wow, yours is hugh compared to what it says in the PF. This isn't a Cleome is it? lol

I will be glad to send you all 3 of the plants I mentioned above.
Will get this out to you on Thurs. or Fri.

Donna

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

No it is for sure not a cleome. Positively a Cat's Whiskers. I'm not sure why they grew into bushes. Maybe since I got it at the Technical College it is some strange variety. Who knows. But the blooms are identical to the photos in the plant files and it was labeled Cat's Whiskers. Thanks much for the trade.

Robin,

The daylilies are still new. I only have 1 or 2 of each and they only have about 6" of foliage at that. NEXT year will hopefully be another story!

I do have tons of Bolivian Sunset, Agave, and I can get you unrooted cuttings of stuff. Let me know!
Ana

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

Hi Ana: I am not a very good houseplant person and Agave is not hardy here. I'll just send this Whisker to you and you can send me the postage. Then we can trade daylilies in the spring. I'll let you know the postage tomorrow. It is best for me if you can paypal it.

Robin

darn!
so sorry i missed the cat's whiskers!
they're my fixation du jour :)

Robin,

Just let me know! I love PayPal for postage, so easy.

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

Marsha, I am going out "digginit" this morning. I'll let you know if I have any extra. Hope all is well in Chapel Hill.

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

I have enough for SoCal, AnaM, and Digginit and also one extra if someone wants it. I also have lots of cuttings after trimming all these guys back. The plant files say it roots easily if someone wants cuttings.

DARN!! I am always too late it seems. I have been lusting after this plant for years and can't find one anywhere. I believe it is just a myth and doesn't exist- the Holy Grail of the plant world- LOL!

Myrtle Beach, SC

LOL Berrygirl, I didn't respond either because I thought there were only 2 ....when I snooze I lose :))
Margo

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

Berrygirl I can send some cuttings. They say they root very easily. Just stick in potting soil. Want some? I think this plant is not going to be hardy for you though. It only hardy to about zone 8 or 9. But I agree with you. It is a beautiful plant and hard to fine.

I'd like to try some cuttings if you have any left. It really is beautiful!

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

thrip,
YES!! I would love to try to root some. If they root I can always overwinter it in the house.

THANKS so very very much!!

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

OK. I'll send cuttings to berrygirl and jessmerritt tomorrow. It would be great if you could paypal the postage to me. My address is thripmaster@aol.com. Also if your mailing addresses are not in the exchange, please DM them to me. Good luck rooting. I may try to root some myself so I have some more to plant in the spring.

Robin

Casselberry, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi Thripmaster,

Let me know how much for postage and I will paypal it to you... I am in the exchange, too.

THANKS!!!

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

Postage for the cuttings should be 3.85. AnaM..I can't remember what the postage was for you. Just look on the box when you get it.

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Hey Robin, I have your plants ready to go into the box and will mail it out tomorrow. I was going to send it today, until I realized that it would arrive on Sunday and that wouldn't be a good thing. :-)

I also cleaned out the area where my new Cat's Whiskers will go. I'm doing the BIG happy dance for sure.

Donna

Casselberry, FL(Zone 9b)

thripmaster,

Holy Cow! Thank you so very much for the lovely plant. I was very happily surprised at the size of the plant. It arrived in wonderful condition. Thank you so very very much. I already plotted where it is going to go, in a nice moist spot. First thing in the morning, out I go! You should have a notice from PayPal shortly for the postage.

Thank you very very much and I am putting a marker on it so I know it came from you! Thanks, Ana

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Got mine today as well, all safe and sound. Thank you so much!

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow! The post office must be having a good week! Those plants got there quick! Hope they grow well for you.

Robin

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Hey Robin,

Just wondering if you received my box yet? You should have received it yesterday.

Donna

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

Hi Donna: Yes, when I got home last night your package was waiting for me. I must say I have never traded with a more generous trader! Thank you so much. That box was absolutely packed with tons of cool plants. I have them sitting here on my kitchen counter taking a drink of water while I try to figure out what they all are and how to grow them. You must have an outrageous garden to have all that stuff. You sent me things that I have never heard of! How cool! Thanks again. I really appreciate it and feel a bit in your debt! You are a great trader.

Robin

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

OOOooo, what nice things to say. lol
So glad to hear they arrived on time and safely. If you have any questions on any of them, please feel free to email me. I think I forgot to tell you the color of the Epidendrum...it's a hot pink color. Here is a link to info on it. http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art956.asp

These are very easy to grow and long as they don't freeze. Don't plant them in an Orchid mix, just a well drained potting soil.

This was a great trade for both of us and I really do appreciate your kindness also.

Thanks,
Donna

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Got bogged down with work so couldn't dig your daylilies until this AM, sorry. Anyways they on their way today. I didn't dig Red Volunteer as I am watching the foliage for possible rust, didn't think you would like that! The other two are quite big though.
Thanks for the trade!

Sue

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

Ok..no problem

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

CalifSue..got the daylilies this weekend. Big huge beautiful fans. Thanks so much! Great trade.

And AnnaM...got the postage. Thanks!

Robin
