Brugmansia - How do you pronounce it?

Wichita, KS

When I go into the nurseries here, no one knows what I am asking for - including Angel's Trumpet.
Maybe I am pronouncing it wrong.

How do YOU say it?

Maybe it still hasn't made it to the nurseries in your area. Many of the garden centers here don't carry them, and those who do usually don't know the difference between Datura and Brugmansia and call them all Angel Trumpet.

Lots of good sources here, but all mail order and you can't carry home a big plant.

Wichita, KS

I was able to pick up Datura and a SnowBank at a nursery here, earlier in the season.
But no one there knew anything about them.

SnowBank has been slow grower and caterpillars love it!

I got a yellow one last year from a nursery in the S. end of town. It bloomed for me this year. It is sooo beautiful. It has got me hooked even more than I was by seeing everyone's pictures here.

Soon, I will be receiving cuttings and will look forward to the day they bloom.

OK - LindaSC - how do you pronounce it? LOL

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

Personally, I usually just say "Brug" (sounds like broog). But from what I understand, it is pronounced, "Broog-MAN-see-uh".
If I am incorrect, please let me know, because I am rapidly falling under their spell!! No matter how it is pronounced, it is incredibly beautiful!

yep, Barb - that is my understanding "BroogMANseeuh" or "Broog" for short. :-)

Some I know, say, "Brug" - rhymes with rug.

Eileen, what a great site! Found out that I'd been pronouncing a good many of my plants incorrectly. Thanks for posting it for us!

My maiden name is Brugman, it is pronounced Brug as in rhymes with rug.

But that may not be the same way Brugmansia is pronounced, just the way we pronounce it

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Yep, we pronounce it as rhyming with rug too...

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

I've pronounced it Brug like rug, and know many that say broog.

I look it as the same thing as "poTAYtoe & poTAHto' and tomAtoes/tomahtoes

Vit-a-mins & V'eye'-ta-mins.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

See also the Botanary link at top of page. Great information.

Kernersville, NC(Zone 7a)

I assumed it rhymed with rug so, since it seems acceptable, I'll keep on with that. I found out from that link that I and everyone I have ever met (who says it) pronounces hydrangea incorrectly. Oh well, I try! Thanks for this info and for that link.

Of course I had to run back and look how they pronounce hydrangea, Rachel. LOL. I have the end as 1 syllable (ja), not 2 as they do (-jee-uh) so I guess I fail also. I rarely get to plant speak in person so I know I have my own made up pronunciations.

I say broog man z a.

Denise, you almost had a claim to fame, for Brugmansia is named after a Brugmans.
"A Christian Hendrick Persoon named the genus in honor of Sebald Justin Brugmans (1763-1819) a professor of natural history in Leiden."

So if we knew how he pronounced his name, we would know the real pronunciation!

What I find of interest is what is the plural of Brugmansia. Is it Brugmansias as in this forum's name? Or just Brugmansia, no S? I always feel the plural has no S on the end.

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

Kell, I agree. The plural to me is Brugmansia, as in, "Look at all those blooms on the Brugmansia!" That could refer to one plant with many blooms or many plants with many blooms.
Now.. I need to check out hydrangea, too.. hy-dran-ja, right? Hmmm.

Barb

Kernersville, NC(Zone 7a)

Sorry, I should have said how we pronounce it...hy-DRAIN-ja with a long A in the middle and the short ja on the end. Sometimes the drain part has 2 syllables, depending on the person's drawl lol.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Go listen to this site. It actually says the words. Too cool. And it agrees with our pronunciation too of hydrangea. LOL

And also Hydrangea is another that has no S for the plural.

Thanks nuts I have been wanting to know the correct way to say it since I joined DG's. But never did ask. Now I know, and believe me I wasn't pronouncing it correct.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have the Brugmansia down right but my suaveolens needs some work. LOL

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Pssst...we have a pretty extensive dictionary of plant names, their pronunciations and meanings right here: http://davesgarden.com/botanary/

We don't have audio files, although we've toyed with the idea. (We just need someone who is comfortable using the technology, and can clearly enunciate each word; ideally, they would also have no noticeable accent (southern, northern or otherwise ;o)

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

I use Botanary all the time, the audio in the taunton link is very helpful.

I've got to work on swah vee OH lens

Oh too bad Denise. You would have been royalty on this forum. LOL.

Me too on pronunciation, I am so bad. If you ever get to talk to Marilyn Pekasky (Pekasky here on Dave's), she is an encyclopedia of the correct names of plants esp cactus and succulents her true loves. She rattles them off so easily. Even if I could say them correctly, I could never remember them all.
