Ft Worth Swap Next Sunday! November 6

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Can't believe I haven't posted this before now.
Where has my mind been???
Out in the compost pile???

Bring your "extras": there'll be new gardeners who need them.

If you *are* a new gardener with no extras, puleeze come:
there'll be lots of gardeners who bring plants & seeds to get them "adopted"!

To see who's been digging & what they're bringing & what they're hoping to find, use this link:

Whoa! That is this weekend!!! But close to home for me. I hope to make it, just to meet a few people even if I don't trade. Thanks for posting!

Is it just me?? The swap is Sunday Nov. 7th? My calendar says the 7th is Monday. Is it the 6th??

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

The first message on the other thread had the wrong date.

It's Sunday the 6th.

From Dallas, if I-20 is closer:

Go west through Arlington & take
287 North to
I-30 West.
Exit at University.
This exit is a "U", so you'll be facing east when you get to the stop light. Turn
left (north) & enter the park at the first entrance.
Follow the little road or lane around just past the gazebo & you'll see millions of people with plants!

If you're closer to I-30, go
west on 30 & then follow the rest of the directions above.

The park is just across from the Ft Worth Botanic Gardens, which are just beautiful.

I love the FWBG; their displays are more or less permanent, so everything we see there is something we conceivably could do at home.

Some of the gardens/arboreteums/displays in other areas are labor-intensive & wasteful.

(Tulips for example. If you spend $14,000 on tulips to make your gardens look like a display garden, next year you'll have to spend another $14,000!)

I still have lots of chocolate mint & a ton of cannas & four o'clocks; let me know if you're interested.

(I probably would have to bring them wrapped in wet newspaper, so you'd need to plan to plant them pretty quickly).

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Sylvia/Sedrick I am going to try to make it, I am not sooo sure I will be able to and it is not like I have anything to trade yet and not that I have much room for anything in the areas I have open unless I start a new bed... ummm

Sylvia/texasgreen you know those cannas can all stop here close by :-)

Mitch, Mitch, Mitch.

You poor young innocent.

You don't know what you're saying!

Cannas grow, they spread, they breed in paper bags & in the dog's water dish! (I don't always get them into soil, so they need to at least have water...)

Seriously, I have some for the swap, but I have beaucoups more that must be thinned.

I'll be happy to bring 'em as you have room.

Just let me know.

This morning I potted up 3 or 4 lamb's ears & a 3-4' redbud seedling for the swap.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

sedrick - it is a Sat - the one after next in fact. it is going to be great to meet all our Southern Friends.

texasgreen - I will take your thinnings I am trying to ring the backyard in cannas - it was cannas or sun chokes and well cannas won due to the fact they are better the thin out and look much better in bloom! So I still have 150 of the line to plant so I am still out look for some.

Mitch

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

I think I'm going to come, mainly just to visit. I decided to maybe bring some red and yellow cannas also and some red salvias, all for new gardeners. (or old gardeners if they want!)

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Konkreteblond-Yay! It'll be good to see you!

I just recruited a new participant-if she can make it Sunday.

Bobbie is a garden consultant, heavy into irises!

If she can make it, she'll bring:

Mexican bush sage
candlestick plant seeds
passion vine (or is it passion *flower* vine?)
water hyacinth: This is illegal to sell or to place in a Texas waterway, but you can own/use it in your own contained water feature.
Scotsman's Pipe (is this the same as Dutchman's Pipe? I forgot to ask.)

She is interested in:
herbs
irises of any kind, historic & "found on the side of the road", any kind!
anything for hanging baskets
Louisiana iris of any kind

Bobbie's the eccentric I aspire to be:

There's a beautiful home over here, where the iris garden has been stunning every spring for as long as I've been in the area.
This spring, Bobbie noticed that the iris garden was raggedy-looking.
So she went to the door & rang the bell & the owner said he's elderly & can't keep it up as well any more.

She made him a deal:
She'd clean it up & maintain it this summer if she could keep the surplus iris.

So she kept up the iris garden, & it's beautiful once again.

and she got sooo many irises that she took a bunch onto the Ovilla Garden Club's float in the parade.

You know how some people toss candy to the crowd?....

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Ohhhhh, how awesome would that be?!! A parade where people throw out PLANTS!!! :)))

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Just left Bobbie's house:

She's recruited a crew of friends to help her put things in pots.
(I escaped!)

She has some oxalis & some cactus all ready to go, don't know if she/I mentioned it last night.

Konkreteblond-I thought throwing irises sounded like fun, too!

Maybe we can be in a parade someday....

"Texas Forum Wackos"

We could wear cut-offs & disgusting tee shirts with flip-flops & hats that have been used as containers for plants, mulch, & the occasional baby bird, & our float could be decorated with garden forks, little red wagons, bales of hay, empty water bottles, plastic picnic knives (plant labels), string, wire, water hoses, & metal edging!

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL! And we can't forget the rubber boots or garden shoes that tie the whole outfit together! But...if I'm IN the parade, I can't have plants thrown AT me. It sounds like a good way to get rid of Mexican Petunias or red salvias! LOL!

I just got back from the Japanese Gardens and a quick run thru the Botanic Gardens. It still looks beautiful over there! There's a whole other section I will have to go thru again on Sunday after the swap.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey Konkrete, I just got home from Japanese Gardens, had a dinner there tonight!...LOL!. If I had known you were up this way, I would have invited you to join my DH and me. Hope to see you and others Sunday.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Did you?! lol...I LOVE the JG! I took my son and his friend who had never been. I wanted to take them while the weather was so nice. I need to get down there alone one time before it changes too. It's such an awesome place to go and relax, especially for me who has NO shade at my house.

I'll be there on Sunday. A few of my other gardening friends will be coming too. (Cathy, Cynthia, Cindy) I'm glad that I'll get to go back to the Botanic Gardens because I sure wanted to stay longer tonight!

I wish this was my backyard!

I'll be coming with Bobbie in her pick-up truck:
more room for plants!

I have a box of stuff for Mitch already at the side of the office (too hot to put it on the porch) & will add more but don't know if I'll get it done before the swap.

Please click on the link above to see what the other texas forum people are up to.

See you there!

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

TX Green - you know I head over there anytime I read "plants on the side of the office"!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Well I got busy and rustled up some swapping stuff, I will bring a few things I dug this afternoon. Not much, but with short notice….better than zip.

Well I managed to get some items dug today to bring tomorrow. Not much but better than what I was bringing! LOL!

Potted:
White Althea (Rose of Sharon)
Honeysuckle Vine
Pink Wood Sorrel, Oxalis
Sedum, yellow

Bare rooted:
White Butterfly Ginger
Mother-In-Law Tongue
Spider Plant Starts

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Ugh....I have ZIP. lol Well, that's not really true because I have a bunch of tall red cannas and some yellow ones that I'm bringing. If there are new gardeners then they might want some. I had to thin them out anyways. I just do NOT feel like potting anything up. I don't have anything to pot up tho, so I'm mainly coming to visit.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

If I get to make it that is all I am going to do - meet new people visit and bring home a few babies that just need homes!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I started by pulling up some wandering honeysuckle and noticed they were nicely rooted. Then saw a few other items that were strays and got my shovel. I wasn't going to bring anything either, but it was so nice outside this afternoon and once I got started it didn't take long to gather up a couple of each item.
Well need to get to bed, I am nodding off!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Swapped everything I came with and took home a few things I didn't have. Nice swap, thanks for posting it Sylvia.
