Canna lau

Louisville, KY

OK well the ones of you with a perverted sense of humor may have figured the name to this canna has its hidden message. This maybe the most exciting canna I have breed. This is a hybrid off of Intrgue it has only flowered once with small pinkish orange flowers. The leaves are what look amazing. From what I hear no one has come up with any new variegated cannas like tropicanna and bengal tiger for over 20 years or more? The sources of all these cannas seem to be from african and a bit hard to tack down exactly who did them.

This canna grows so far to about 5 ft tall thin narrow leaves looking more like a hawaiian Ti plant than a canna. The coloring is bright pink with purple and a few other colors. Extremely interesting looking here is a pic of a leaf of the plant.

Holy Cow! That is pretty amazing. Even if it isnt quite mass production quality, it definitely makes for good stock. Maybe some of those purplely flowered ones of yours with this might do the trick? Does this at least make lots of leaves per stalk? So that it makes for a bushy plant where the flowers are secondary?

I love playing with genetics. So cool. I hope that your new hybrids kick butt in the business world!

That is amazing!! WOW, good job.

So far it's hard to tell what this plant will do exactly. I would say it will grow much like regular intrgue canna. It's flowers have not yet matured but I doubt they will be much more prettier than a regular intrgue.

too cool, and a keeper also.

Bravo for the display of color! Even if the flowers aren't impressive, the foliage alone makes that canna a keeper!

And I thought tropicanna was beautiful....I want this one....how long before it will come on the market?...Judy

Wow, that is wild. I must have one.

Louisville, KY

Well I took a few photos today of this one. It had a nice winters nap and is now ready to start really growing this season. I figured many of you would like to see the new growth.

each leaf is different and some have different variegations on it. very odd for a canna.

A few leaves have bright neon pink streaks in the purple foliage while others have this variegation seen here. I am trying to determine how many colors it actually has in this leaf.

Pink purple green blue red orange Anything else??

That is really WOW! I can only imagine how popular this one will be when it does become available! Good for you. Of course, you will give those of on Dave's the heads up when it does go public, I can only imagine it will sell out quickly! Very, very beautiful.

Sunset Beach, NC(Zone 8a)

Absolutely stunning! When they're ready for the public, Amanda would love to have a cousin come live with her!

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Have Intrigue and love it.....trying to decide still on one called Red Wine. I go for the foliage, flowers are just the cherries on top.

Great work once again Brian, post a pic of this on the new Canna Forum....I'm ready for this one to be released, I'll go prep the soil now....

I'm not much into Cannas but I do have to put my 2 cents worth in on this one. It is beautiful. I would buy this one if for nothing else but for the beautiful leaves it has. Please do keep us all informed on when it may be going up for sale. I am definitely interested.

Anybody planting Canna STUTTGART'S besides me? I have 6 out of 10 tubers coming up in a dark corner of my east facing patio. They look wickedly HEARTY and STOUT!

Would love to compare progress with someone else growning them. I believe someone ordered some the weekend before I got mine. Come back soon with a reply. Thanks.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I ordered this week-end. Probably won't receive until Thur. or Fri. I won two on Ebay.

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

Mine are about 18 inches tall so far....we need rain badly, so once we get a little moisture, I know they'll pop up more.

I got my two in the mail today. Plan on planting after Tues. we are suppose to get down to 38* Tues. evening. We have gotten a little over an inch of rain in the last two days.

Merrymary I hope mine will look as good as yours. About how long did it take them to come up after planting them?

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

I want that! Mine! Mine!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I think the person I got mine from on EBay has a couple more up for aution if you are interested. I just checked and she does still have them 2 separate listing. Buy it know. You get two stuttgart, and a bonus of a Wyoming. She is a real fast shipper.

I put mine in a gallon ziploc bag with some soil, and left them in the house a few weeks, until I saw some growth starting. Once the growth begins, I plant them outside. It seems to speed up their growing process. About 2 weeks inside, then planted outside, 18 -24 inches about 4 weeks after I stuck them in the ground.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Mine came in sandwich size plastic bags with potting soil, so I will leave them and wait a couple of weeks to see some growth before I plant. Do I need to water or anything. The zip lock is about halve way open do I need to close completely or open all the way. Like I mentioned once somewhere I am new to Canna's. I do know one thing about them they need to be dug up before frost.

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

This canna is gorgeous Brian!! Hurry and release it...pleaseeeeeeeeeeee??? :):)

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

No, dont water too much while in the ziploc....keep it closed until you see a little sprout, then open it half way. A few days after that you can plant them in the ground.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Thanks Mary.

Sorry Brian for hijacking your thread. It's just that one thing lead to another, if you know what I mean.
But I do second Marcy_1 please do hurry up and release the Canna Lau because it is a very beautiful canna.

I am trying its hard to get these things off the ground sometimes. I am trying to get a patient on the plant and finding a good larger nursery to distribute it. But so far it has been a bit slow.

Safety Harbor, FL(Zone 9b)

We are all rooting for you! Would a batch of pre-orders help?

Oakland, CA(Zone 10b)

Oh my goodness! The most painterly canna ever! Put me on the list of those waiting patiently for its release. Congrats on a remarkable achievement!
