Greek Mountain Tea

Salem, MA

I just got some of this at the grocery store - it's supposed to be good for the upper respiratory track. Made a minty sort of tea. Sideritis syriaca, I think. Does anyone have any experience with it?

It is listed in my herb book. A.K.A. Ironwort.

I'll quote, "Traditional tea consumed throughout Grece to treat the common cold. Sold in dried form in most Greek markets worldwide. Sideritis species have proven anti-inflammatory properties; research into anti-arthritic and anti-microbial uses is ongoing. In the wild, plants thrive on sunny, rocky, dry hillsides growing to 20" with attractive grey-woolly leaves."
Doesn't give any info on preparations though. Zones 8-10 perennial, seeds can been sown in spring and fall with moderate difficulty.

Sorry that's all I've got for you. I guess I'll update the plantfile. You should too!

I am not sure if it is the same type of tea but about 4 years ago I went to greece and had mountain tea, it was really good and minty as you say, I know the greeks drink it a lot but as for being used for the respiratory system I am not sure.
