Brugmansia/Angel Trumpet plant "CHEROKEE"

Union City, CA(Zone 9b)

I just got yesterday - bought off ebay - 6 inch plant . I put it in a 5 gallon pot with super soil . How long before I feed it ? 0-10-10 - - 12-12-12 - - 15-15-15 - - If not then what ? Thank you .

A plant.. so it was already rooted? Nice :) One thing is you might want to switch it to a smaller pot. A quart sized unless it has a really huge root system already. They are prone to root rot and the smaller post help prevent that..then you just switch up as they need it

Laura is so right Tony esp as it is the start of our rainy season. In spring I would say go for it for they grow fast but now they will start slowing down because of the cold.

The biggest problem I have is rot in the winter, outside and in my hoophouse. Unless of course you have a nice GH all heated! LOL. But even then, you are in the wrong season. They want to be quiet soon.

I stop fertilizing mine in September here. I start again March/April. Oh I can't wait for spring. LOL

I could use some help too! I just bought two this month - one is tiny: gallon container and almost all of its leaves have dropped. The other is a larger container and about 3-3/12 feet tall, with lots of leaves still. I have the pots on the southern exposure of our deck. We are still experiencing days in the high 50's, lows in the 40's. Do I bring them into the house for winter? Do I let them winter out there? (We rarely get frost, but lots of rain.) Do I cut the stalks?

Totally new to these - very very excited about them, after seeing all the pics here at DG. But even having read a lot of the posts, I'm not sure what to do now. :o(

Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can offer.

Happy Autumn,

What zone is Eureka, Sanna? I thought you got real cold there. Sounds like you have similar winters to me here in the East Bay.

I do both, I bring some indoors, some go to a hoophouse I put up every November and some get left out to fend for themselves. This year lots will be left out as I am becoming more interested in other kinds of plants that I will bring into the hoophouse instead.

The biggest problem I have is the cold and the wet spells rot for brugs. So after mid October I try not to cut on any of my brugs, it does not heal well and lets rot in.

They seem to be able to tolerate lots more rain than if they were getting wet from a hose. But about January, I may turn some pots on their sides so they do not get anymore rain in them if we are having tons of rain. I also turn them on their side if I think we are going to get any frost.

The ones in the ground I will toss a sheet over. However I have a lot that are so tall, I can't reach them even a ladder. Those tops can get frost bitten and if they do, I leave them alone till spring. I would never cut on them in the winter. Then in spring I cut off the die back.

I wonder why the one in the small pot has dropped its leaves? None of mine do that even when the temp gets to the 30s. If it is overpotted, do not leave it out. I never repot mine from August on because I want the pots to dry out fast in winter. If I have lots of extra wet dirt around the roots in winter, they will rot. Much better they be rootbound. Perhaps where you are it stays colder longer than here. One of the reasons mine do not go dormant, is the cold only lasts a few hours at most. I have no prolonged cold spells. If that is the case, maybe you should protect them inside.

If you leave them outside, put them under some protection like the overhang of your house or under a tree. This will help them get thru the cold days. The little one I would bring it in. I wonder if it is a versi.

On my special ones, I always bring a cutting inside just in case the mother one dies over winter. Insurance. If you do take a cutting, make sure you seal the wound immediately to protect the plant. And do it on a dry, sunny day if you can find one.

Good luck! I bet you do great. These are very resilient actually, with 9 lives. Unless of course it is a real special one to you then it will drop dead at its first chance. LOL

Thanks so much for taking the time to give me so much info!! Ya know, I can never remember my USDA zone, but my Sunset zone is 17. I think, from what I know, we may get just a tad cooler than you in the winter, and you get a bit warmer in the summer.

The one that dropped the leaves just reads Angels Trumpet on the tag. I almost bought it at the nursery one weekend (when it was prettier...) and then found it a few weeks later and decided to grab it up. It's just two single stalks, tho' when I saw it the first time it did have some blooms (whitish-yellowish). The other one is Eagles Tree from a local nursery. It says hardy to 35 deg, maroon flower with yellow veins (sounds pretty!). It has a Y and lots of nubbins on the stalks. Can't wait for that one!

I think I will bring the little one inside right away, as it's looking a bit like it could rot. Another question - do you know if they are poisonous to cats? My cats love to eat some of my houseplants....

Thanks again Kell....

they are poisonous to cats . They and Datrua are/were called Loco weed by cowboys . The cows and deer would eat it and stager around as if dizzy

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have 4 cats and all are alive and so far no staggering! LOL. I have read where no animals have been harmed then I did read a post where an animal died. So I do not really know. I know I have heard what Tony just said about Datura.

Maybe you should grow some grass routinely for your kitties to eat inside. Mine are indoor/outdoor so they get to eat lots of grass. They love it, and never touch my plants to eat. However, Molly Mouse loves to use brugs as her scratching posts.

I wonder if you have a sang there. I have been seeing lots of them for sale lately in 5 gallon pots. So its name is Eagles Tree? Or is that the grower? Well I am now dying to see that one too. LOL. Sounds different and I am all for different. After awhile these get a little boring. Do you have a digital camera, Sanna? Maybe you could take a pic of the leaves, and I could ID it from that.
Thanks!
