Rooting the y part of the stem

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

My pink beauty was over 10ft tall,to big to bring inside,so I cut below the y to try to root, which is about a inch and half in diameter, stuck it in a bucket of water a week ago,and already forming roots.

Looks good! Does anyone use root stimulator on cuttings?

Lookin great!

Crystal:

I use Green Light stimulator(5-20-10), mixed with water, for ones that are taking a long time to start roots.

Seems these thing are like weeds! I wonder if you just dropped a cutting in the dirt if it would grow? I was carrying a bunch of Iris one time & evidently one dropped out, the next year I found it growing along side of the path I took. Now that's a weed!

Anybody using in willow water for rooting solution?

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Will the cutting bloom as soon as the whole plant (if had been able to keep that?) The reason I am asking is that I have several that have gotten to the humungous bush/tree size and dont have room. inside for them. I would much rather just take cuttings than lug the whole stinking tree into the house, but fear I won't get blooms next summer.

Someone let me know - I need to do something with them asap

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Yes, take a big cutting, not especially big around just length, 8"-12", or larger. If you can get some "Y" cuttings all the better, should bloom next year for you. Beats hauling large pots/brugs inside for the winter.

Don: Have heard willow water is the same as root stimulator.

Sarv48, I have been taking 4 ft pieces off some of my seedlings I have growing in rented plots. I have been taking a piece that has a Y on it. I then pot them up in gallon cans trying to save on room. They will bloom quickly come spring.

I have heard of willow water but have never used it. Can anyone explain it again?

Thanks Donna. That was so interesting!! I always buy some Corkscrew Willow branches for my arrangements in the fall, do you think those would work? The article says "Any willow (Salix) tree or shrub species will work" so I assume Corkscrew Willow is a true Salix.

The rest was so interesting also. Doesn't this sound similar to Messenger?
"...salicylic acid as a key regulator of SAR and expression of defense genes "

Yes it is.........CORKSCREW WILLOW - Salix matsudana `Tortuosa'

I use willow brances in all my water buckets for rooting cuttings, no matter what kind, and YES corkscrew willows work just as well as the weeping willow or the pussy willow. I have done this for years and have always had great luck with it.

Don how will you contine with your "starting" to root huge cutting? have you potted it already or will you wait till it forms more root and then pot it up?

Glad you started this thread its so interesting!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Wow Donna, that was interesting, anyone want to go in buisness making willow toothpicks, lightly scented of aspirin!!!LOL!
Yes I already potteds up the huge y cutting,so far so good,it's a good 2 1/2 ft in length, and almost 2 inches in diameter, never rooted one that big before,so I'm not sure of the outcome.
The ones I'm having trouble to root are the HG,they just seem to rot and turn mushy,2 years now and no flowers on my hg vareity,so I thought to try new cuttings to see if I have any better luck getting flowers.

Hi Don! Is that the Pink Beauty I sent you? It looks great! The mother plant is in the ground here and is probably around ten to twelve feet also; although, I've pruned it back some. I just noticed today how thick the trunk is getting. It must be six inches across!

I do the same thing with my cuttings when I save them. I just stick them in water and forget about them. I've left some in water for six months. They get quite a nice root system just sitting in water. I've had roots become so big and thick that I had trouble getting them out of the vase they were in! I just keep adding water when the water level gets low.

About the HG, mine tends to bloom this time of year when it turns cooler so be sure to leave yours outside as long as you can without letting it freeze. Mine also like to be rootbound, it seems.

Here's my Pink Beauty back in August:

OHHHH, I tossed my HGs. I couldn't take the waiting anymore.

Oh Clare, that is a sight to behold. Too beautiful!! I was going to say the fragrance must be nauseating but then PB here hardly has any fragrance at all.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

LOL, Kell! I don't blame you about the HG's. So far, I've got nothing this year from them. It's true that PB doesn't have a real strong fragrance. EP is right next to it and is a little more fragrant. Right now, I've got CG and Milk 'N Honey blooming, and they are better fragrance-wise. Okay, now, I know this could sound terrible, but I actually prefer it when there are less flowers. LOL! When there are so many flowers like this, I have to do a lot of clean up beneath the tree! When there a fewer, I can appreciate each one more easily! I just went out and took a picture of PB, but it's not a great picture. I think my rechargable batteries in my camera need to be replaced. Anyhow, it's much more compact since I gave it a good pruning.

Funny you said that about the cleanup. Brugs are considered trash plants here by a lot of people, because they are so messy. I can't give them away usually. I don't like big bushes of them for that reason too. They are way too messy between their yellowing leaves and the old blooms.

I can see what a thick and sturdy trunk and stems that has. Looks great!!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Kell!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yep,Clare it the cutting you sent me,PB is a very vigorous grower.
I can see the big trunk, and the flush on your first pic is gorgeous.
Mine seem to be vey fragrant here, but not as intense as a sweet smell
as some of the others.
We had 3 hard frost already so I brought in the HG,it had one bud on it but the shock of digging it up,made it fall off!!!
Hmm,I didn't know you were to clean the fallen flowers up!!!!
Thats organic fertilizer, for the next flush!!!!LOL
You guys are working to hard, and not spending more time enjoying the garden!!!!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

LOL! Don, you are so right! Believe me, if it were up to me, the faded fallen flowers would just lie there on the ground forever, but my better half is always urging me (read nagging me) with the word "maintenance." He wants the yard to have a tidy appearance for some ridiculous reason! I agree that PB is a vigorous grower -- God love her. I do appreciate that. So sorry about those darn frosts and about the HG bud. Maybe you will get more buds now that it is inside.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

LOL! Sorry you won't share the garden rake with your better half on the maintance,in the garden!!!LOL
Keep fingers crossed on the hg!!!
