In your zone planting now should be fine and daylilies are among the toughest of perennials (especially D'oro). I plant mine with the crown at soil level or barely above. I like to dig a hole that will accomadate the roots and make a little mound in the center, spread the roots over the mound, fill with water, and add back fill. The growth showing should be above ground, but may die back or stay green in your zone. I'm no expert on daylilies, but have grown them for years and rarely had any problems with them. For more detail you may want to post on the Daylily forum where you'll be amazed how big the daylily world is! Good luck, Neal.
