Ti Plant

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

A friend brought me home a ti plant root cutting (cordyline terminalis) from Hawaii. Instructions said to trim the ends of the cutting and soak in water until roots form. Well it now has a few little nubby roots on it. How do I plant it? Horizontally like it was soaking in the water or should it go in the soil vertically? Any tips on these?

Most references recommend laying the "log" horizontally half buried in moist soil or sand. Since yours is already rooted, I would plant it upright if the roots are at one end or horizontally if the roots are popping out all along the stem. Either way I don't think it matters much. There is potential for growth at every node.

Hi Poppysue! :) I had the same question, but I just planted mine horizontally since all of the roots were forming that way, and they are all growing well now. Good luck! --Surf :)

I finally got my little ti root potted and some little critter carted it off! What would eat it? ... a squirrel?

Karma - Sweet of you to offer. I think I'll pass though. I'm not really not into tropicals ... I just wanted to get this one going 'cause it was from my friend. Thanks for the offer!
