starting a pond

Serpent River, Canada

hello all
this help is for a friend.
she wants to put a pond which is underneath a huge maple tree and there are small shrubs around. now i had told you that even if she digs them out isnt there a change of some trees trying to emerge up through the liner .
what advice can i give her in constructing a pond there.
any subjections would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Maples have massive roots! I doubt she'll ever be able to dig deep enough to put the pond in. Maybe she should think about having it above the ground.

It is always best to avoid making a pond under a large tree like that anyway, the leaves would polute the water really quickly, especially in Autumn, the pond would be filled with leaves in just a few hours and it would require a lot of work to keep them out, and like poppysue says the roots of a large tree create a problem from the start, and it is quite possible for roots to grow and put a hole in the liner too, placing a pond in shade or partial shade is good, but not under a big tree.
