or did you have delivery services in your youth that are no more??
I'm posting this here because the services I remember the most were food related.
Growing up on (then) rural Long Island, NY, the delivery folks were imperative, as my mom never learned to drive, we were miles from town, my dad commuted into Manhattan every day, & stores back then were not open late at night.
I distinctly remember best of all The Milkman. Milk in glass bottles with the crimped cardboard tops, chocolate milk - same way, eggs, cream, sour cream, orange juice, etc. You just left the empties in the metal "milkbox" outside the back door, along with a list of what you wanted him to leave. I seem to remember him coming 2-3 times per week.
Next in popularity for us was The Breadman, who came once or twice a week. All kinds of loaf bread, along with - best of all - a bazillion (or so it seemed to a young kid like me) different kinds of donuts - some of them still warm. My favorite were the plain & plain glazed. Nothing like that with a glass of milk to rot your teeth & get you ready for the school day - lol!!!
The other two I remember were The Fuller Brush Man, who came once a month & sold personal care & housecare items, & The Diaper Company who came 2-3 times per week to pick up sacks of dirty diapers & deliver stacks of clean ones. Back then, cesspool septic systems were relatively small & diaper services really cut back on straining the system.
So if you don't mind dating yourself - what home services do you remember.
Do You Remember. . . .
