Variegated Plumie pic

Freeport, Bahamas(Zone 10a)

Here is a pic of the little one I was talking about. Notice how it is the only one in an entire flat of seedlings. These just came out of the garage where they were hiding from Wilma. Since I have no power other than a generator I have no excuse not to spend the day repotting all of these adorable babies into their own pots.

Think it will stay this cute? I hope so!!!

Very nice, Lisa! Awesome! I hope it stays that way for you also. You will have a gorgeous plant if that keeps up. My fingers are crossed for you.

Well look at that, I like it. Are they cuttings or seedlings?

Freeport, Bahamas(Zone 10a)

They are all seedlings. I went a little overboard this spring/summer and now have started around 100 plumeria from seeds. I received my first seeds as mystery gifts from MPG when I bought some cuttings from them. Then I went a little overboard on ebay and all but maybe 2% germinated for me. So I will definitely be a happy camper in a couple years!

I still have more seeds but I think it might be too cool to start them now, they germinated so quickly during the summer.

Does anyone know if I can keep the seeds over the winter and if they will be okay to start next spring? Or should I start them now and take my chances? It doesn't get "cold" here, but the day temps will start going down to highs of high 70's and lows at night of high 60's. Anyone know?

Lisa, do you know where the variegated seedling came from? More than likely, it did not come from a variegated plumeria. Variegated plumerias hardly ever bloom, much less set seedpods, and the owner of a variegated plumeria surely would have kept the seeds for himself/herself if indeed it set seeds in the first place. Because of this, I suspect your variegated plumeria is from a deficiency, rather than from a chimera, and it will outgrow this in time, but it surely is beautiful.

Fall/winter is a good time to sow seeds indoors by a sunny window in my climate or in colder climates. I sowed about 40 one December! They are nearly two years old now, and many of them have inflo's. Your outdoor climate is ideal (you lucky person you) for sowing seeds now if you want to sow them outside, or you can sow them inside if it rains alot. You don't want them to get too moist because they will rot quickly so if moisture is a factor there, you may want to sow them indoors. They will keep and be fine in the spring also and shouldn't lose any viability.

The seed was in a mystery pack......you know the ones that no one has any idea where they came from but they are cute anyways!

I know it will probably not look like this when it is older but I am really enjoying it now!

I am very protective of my babies.....ask my husband....he laughs at me when it starts to pour outside and I race out to grab the baby plumies and adeniums before they drown. He thinks I have a few screws loose!

I think I will try to start the seeds this fall, the sooner the better!

I have so many babies started, and they are all graduated in age........some started in May, some in July and the latest, including the variegated one was started in September.

I also have some that have flowered, one generic yellow bloomed from February through May this spring. It smelled heavenly! It was a lot of fun to go out every morning and see its cheerful bloom! I also enjoy it because it just happens to flower during our flower show season so next year I have been told I just have to enter it!

I started a lot of the babies to give away as gifts......I am the president of the Freeport Garden Club and I like to give some babies as gifts to my executive board and to visiting speakers etc...

Looks like I will have quite the show in a few years!

It's fabulous, Lisa! All your seedlings look great. I know exactly what you mean about babying them. What's not to love? They are fun and exciting. Please let us know how yours looks over time. I would love to know. I would protect that one over all the others! LOL! It will be interesting to see if the variegation stays. I surely hope it does. That would be awesome!

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Good luck Lisa, are plumeria not common in Freeport? Hope the variegation holds on that baby. Keep us updated.

Linda,

In Freeport we have the generic plumeria....white with yellow, pink and dark pink, almost a red. I have been bringing more exotic plumeria here since I moved here. My husband's family has a timeshare and we go to Hawaii every year so I try to bring back a few different ones each year. And then I have that addiction to seeds on ebay.....so I am getting quite the collection. I am friends with the head of the local nursery and she jokes that soon she will have to order from me!

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

I love starting things from seeds too. My plumeria are seedlings that I received as a trade from someone else. They are 1 year old now, when should I expect them to bloom? They will go into the garage for the winter in the pots they are growing in.

Lucky you, getting to flower shop in HI. My first plumeria (no longer living) was a cutting I brought back from Oahu about 10 years ago.

Freeport, Bahamas(Zone 10a)

I have heard that seedlings usually take two years to bloom. So maybe next year you should see some nice flowers! Malestrom here on the plumeria board has had some really young ones bloom, I can't recall just how young but I think under one year!

I found a spectacular cutting at the Dole plantation on Oahu last year but didn't grab it when I could. This time I will make sure I get it.

We go to Maui and I do my shopping at MPG or even at the local Hilo Hatties!

I usually try to bring back some cuttings for friends every year!

Lisa, Dole Plantation has a web site. You could check with them and see if they will ship to you. MPG might ship to you also. Here's the link to Dole: http://mgrsti5481a.seamlesstech.biz/Merchant/ and to MPG: http://www.mauiplumeriagardens.com/forums/index.php? Your little variegated baby plumie is really cute Lisa. I hope it stays stays that way for you. I have five little (well not so little any more) seedlings and I just love them. They're such sturdy looking little plants.

Thanks! I hope it stays this way too, but not holding my breath.

I checked out that Dole site........awesome! Brings back great memories. I plan on taking my girls there again in February. We do the maze everytime we go. My husband takes one girl and I get the other and we race to see what team can finish first. We all usually give up after a half hour of getting lost!

I love looking at all my seedlings right now, since everything else that was in the ground has such windburn from Wilma......the little guys look so nice and green and healthy!

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Nice Var there Lisa.
I had 3 that all seem to have outgrown the variegation.
1 has given me an unussual plant that gives yellow/gold new growth which turns yellow after a few months.
Kukiat has one that produces normal green new growth that turn yellow/gold after a bit LOL!
Keep the one you suspect is a var in the filtered sunlight.
Full sun could either hurt it or make it go normal.
Good Luck! That is so exciting! 8D

Freeport, Bahamas(Zone 10a)

Thanks for the hint about the sunlight on the var. seedling Malestrom, I will put it somewhere better right away! I want to keep that striping going as long as I possibly can!

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Absolutely!!
I hope she stays variegated for you. They are hard to find and terribly expensive when you do. Most of the vars are ugly in my opinion. Yours has a nice blotchy white instead of the common sickly yellow splash im used to seeing.
