Its Dichorisandra thyrsiflora, commonly called Blue Ginger. It is not acutally a ginger at all, but is related to the wandering jew. Grows well in shadey places.

It is really pretty, I've never seen it around here.

I had one of these as a 6" plant years ago, but it conked out after a short while. I think it needs more humidity and warmer temps than I can afford it. Thanks for showing us your success, Missy!

I like this one too, Lisa. This is one that Kay sent me:-)

Do you know why the leaves go brown so easily?

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I have never had any ginger plants are they hard to grow?

Edit to say "I forgot to tell you your plant is really pretty, I do love the color. Anything that blooms that good would defiantly be a keeper in my books."

Thanks Arlene and Linda!

Arlene, I tend to water a lot, and I have mine in mostly shade. Perhaps the brown leaves could indicate that it needs more water or maybe more regular watering or maybe less sun? I'm sorry that I'm not much help. This is my first year of growing them.

Linda, this is my first year with gingers, but they seem rather easy to grow, but I'm in 10b where I can leave them in the ground all year. I think you probably have to dig them up and store the rhizomes for the winter where you are, but that's not too tough. I would probably grow them in large containers if I was in your zone so that digging wouldn't be a huge chore. You could just empty the pot in the fall and hose off the potting soil and let them dry and store them. Someone in a colder zone could tell you how to overwinter them better than I could. I normally just have fragrant plants in my garden, but I make an exception when it comes to blue or purple flowers.

clare, howdy! is that blue ginger one plant or two?

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Nery! Howdy! It's just one plant with four or five stems.

note to self: ask 20 questions all in 1 posting.

Clare, how long have you had, where planted, when does it bloom, fast or slow grower. Lisa, same questions for you.

thanks to both for sharing beautiful pix

I put mine in the ground two years ago for the summer and then dug it up and potted it. One mistake is that I didn't know it needed full shade; but during the winter it still does the brown thing. Clare, do your leaves ever do this?

I've had mine outdoors in a container for many years. It does go dormant in the winter and the leaves do turn brown before they fall off. It is a wonderful, easy to grow plant that blooms for months. The butterflies love it too.

Those things that look like potatoes on the roots are tubers that store energy for the plant. Although you are not supposed to be able to grow a new plant from the tubers I was able to do it. When I was dividing the plant once I cut off one of the tubers and planted it in a pot. Nothing happened for a long time, several months at least, then one day when I was ready to toss it out, a shoot came up. A happy surprise.

Hi Nery, I've had the Blue Ginger since last summer. It grew fairly fast over the winter and had to be repotted in the spring. It just started blooming in the beginning of October, and new flower stalks are just opening now so I imagine it should bloom at least until mid-December. It went from a fairly small container to a 15-gallon container in about one year so I would say that it is a fast grower.

Arlene, mine gets the morning sun and sun again in the late afternoon. It probably gets less than six hours of sun so that is part sun. It definitely is not in full shade. I've had a couple of brown tips, I think, when it needed repotting and wasn't getting enough water, but I water a lot, and it is in a bigger container now, and it stays moist all the time so I don't get brown tips or brown leaves. I'm in 10B though so my gingers, cannas, and other tropicals don't die down when winter comes. I have to cut the stalks down in the spring if they are spent.

Ardesia, I read somewhere that you should clip off those things on the roots when you repot and that they aren't needed if a plant is watered well and that they can eventually get very big and push the plant out of the pot.

thanks Clare.

Thanks for all the good information; mine was pot bound for a good while and it probably didn't get enough water.
