I moved Dr Suess into my dining area a week or so ago and all the pods that were on it have opened well inside. What a lovely smell in the house! Do you think it will bloom more this winter if I keep it watered and feed well, or should I cut down on the feeding over winter? I just took cuttings from all my other ones since I don't have much room. All mine bloomed well for me at least 3 or 4 times this first year. Can't wait to see what they do their second year.

Dr Suess Inside for the Winter
That's fantastic Susan! You have done so well this year with your brugs. I can only imagine how your home must smell. What's the word for that?
Brugolishissss...LOL
I don't know what to tell you about fertilizing them during the winter. I have never tried to keep them blooming during the winter. I put mine in a basement and they go dormant.
I'm sure someone will come along and tell you what they do. Keep up the good work.
Kin
Your Dr Seuss looks pinkish, Susan!! Maybe from the reflection of your walls which by the way I love. Are they textured? Your brug looks so perfect there.
LOL Kin Brugolishissss. My husband calls it Brugfoolisyouish!!!
I fertilize and keep going a few of my best brugs (cuttings) inside over winter. I have them in my dining room that has a ceiling of skylights. They grow all winter though not gangbusters. None of them are usually old enough to bloom though so I do not know if they would set buds. I have had a few small cuttings on my seedling tables bloom, but that is usually the exception.
If you try it, let us know!!
Kin, how much light do your brugs get in your winter over winter? Our house space totals less than 800 sq ft, my very generous friend Shirley1md brought over 3 brugs - 2 huge - and if I don't carry them over in the basement in a dormant state, we humans and cats will have to overwinter ourselves out in the tool shed.
So, if you could tell me exactly how you keep your brugs alive in a dormant state over the winter, I would be thrilled. So would my spousal unit.
LOL Bluespiral! & Kell...
I guess I'm lucky in some ways. I don't have a spousal unit and I can do what ever I want!!! LOL BUT my Cat's do their personal # to the plants. I think you know what I mean by that. Nothing like good old chicken wire to keep them out.
I have an unfinished room in the basement with only one window that is only 24" X 36" not much sunlight at all. There is no heat and it is usually around 45 degrees. I wait until the last moment to bring them indoors. This way they loose many of their leaves and get the idea that it's time to go dormant. They remain there for about 5 months with minimal waterings. They really look sad but perk right up come spring time when they move back outdoors. I then have brugs with height and stem growth above the Y to start the new year out right.
Don't fertilize them when they are dormant or semi dormant.
I finally successfully overwither two in the ground this past year. They only grew about 3 feet tall and began blooming several weeks ago. Just didn't work out for me here in Oregon. We get so much rain during the winter and they tend to rot Root Rot from the cold and moisture. Then it takes them too long to grow and get to the Y stage that they require to bloom. I hope this helps. If you look through the forum there are many people who do it this way. I will try and find some threads for you on the subject.
The blooms do look a little pink in the photo don't they? They really are the regular yellow apricot color of Dr Suess. Must be from the walls which are a terracotta color. I textured them and used a number of diffferent glaze colors on them. My house is under 800 sq feet also, so Suess is taking up a lot of my kitchen/dining area along with all my coleus and sweetpotato cuttings. I am thinking about taking the table to the basement for the winter because I enjoy the plants more than eating at the table. Most of my eating is done in front of the TV anyway. Can you tell I live very formally? LOL.
Susan
Hey, plants over tables everyday!! But in my house, my dining room table is a huge plant stand. I couldn't sit there if I wanted. LOL I love your wall!
Kin, I have to fight rot all winter even inside. The humidity is so heavy in the hoophouse.
