When I bought my plants they had yellow on them, but being as I could find them no place else, I got them anyway. I figured with a little love and care, it would take care of itself. It never has, and their babies have it, too. All the pictures I have seen have them looking so green and beautiful. Is there something I can do, or is it naturally that way?
Thanks,
Gabrielle
Another water lettuce and hyacinth question
Water lettuce always did better for me in partial shade, in full sun they always looked paler. I haven't had any problems with water hyacinths yellowing, but have heard of some ponders putting them in a bucket of water with Miracle Gro for a while... then when they look better, hose the roots off and return to the pond. Hope this helps.

I think it is hardy in zones 9-10, here in zone 7, it freezes. I have tried keeping a few by a sunny window during the winter. They looked good for a while, then slowly rotted away. A couple of my friends were successful over wintering them in greenhouses. Guess they just like lots of sun and warm water to survive. I'm going to bring some in again this winter...have nothing to lose by trying.

We have a 20gal aquarium we're going to try for ours. We'll put a new bulb in it and have the water level about 6" below the light - like you said, it can't hurt to try!

We bring our floating plants in during the winter. I keep them in buckets under a grow light. I've done this for the past 3 years and they have done fine. I also have to bring in the sweet flag and pickerel weed. The hardy lilies stay in the pond. I like the idea about the aquarium. Good Luck!
I brought in the black taro last winter, along with umbrella palm and parrot feather. They all spent the winter in a fish tank under a grow light and they did well. The water lettuce I brought in didn't make it though, but I don't think it got enough light.
I used a florescent desk lamp with two bulbs to start a lot of seeds last winter and it did really well. I'm going to try it with the water lettuce and hyacinth this year.
HELP!!! My water hycainths leaves have turned brown and shriveled up........ We added some algae control about 9 days ago, until then they were beautiful, does anyone have any idea what happened. We only added algae control at 1/3 the strength the bottle called for because I didn'twant any problems. Now what do I do????????????????
I would say get them out and into some fertilizer water as was recommended to me. Algae control generally eats up the extra nutrients in the water.
For algae control, try Clear Pond. It is amazing. I just bought some, and ended up making a page on it at my web-site http://communities.msn.com/GabriellesGarden&naventryid=135
