It's ROOTED!

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Being of a somewhat curious nature, I thought I'd take a couple of my cuttings from Carol out to the college where I'm taking Horticulture classes and see how they do if I rooted them in the mist bed. You can imagine my surprise when I checked on them and found the big huge-leafed hoya (which I wiiiiiill find out what the name is!) had ROOTs already - - and it's only been in the mist bed for less than a week! Whoo hoo! So I brought that puppy home today and it is now in its own pot workin' on rooting into some potting soil. I am also having success with some of the cuttings that I'm rooting at home under the 'baggie' method - I see some roots forming.
I am relieved that I'm not killing them all!

Yeah for Betsy! Looks like I'll send my cuttings out to you from now on!!

Out of curiosity, can you send cuttings in the mail when the temperature gets cold?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I wouldn't try it with temps under 40 deg. Unless you send in a styrofoam box which I have received with success. In cold wx. you want to ship dry with little moisture in the box...and wrapped/wrapped/wrapped in newspaper. IMHO.

Heather - feel free to send me ALL your cuttings aaaany ol' time you want! (hee hee)

P.S. Carol - - since I got the cutting from YOU, I was hoping you'd know what is was. thanks! =)

OK...in some thread about propagating large leafed cuttings, I promised a photo of my HUGE leafed H. aff. latifolia in the propagating mode...here it is. They are the cut leaves. Other leaves, even some the size of large H. carnosa or H. motoskei, or eriostemmas, I don't cut...but these were just tooooooo large.

Carol, are you feeding your plants steroids?

The H. aff. latifolia sure has beautiful leaves. Good information about whether to cut the leaves or not when first getting the cuttings going. What are the two kinds in front of the latifolia? I'm trying to figure out which hoyas have thin stems and leaves.

Sandy...I can only ID the ones on the left as H. schneeii. The others I would have to look in the pots at the labels....

That's okay Carol. I think it's going to be impossible for me to identify any of my lovely new cuttings until/if they bloom because there are so many different kinds. Also, I realize that just because a leaf looks thin in a picture doesn't mean it will necessarily be thin if you touched it. I was surprised at how fat some of the leaves are that don't really look that thick, like the H. lacunosa and the H. tsangii leaves. I just need to be patient and let them grow. :-)

I sent out a lot of H. sp. Tanna Island...look at that one and see if it matches your leaves.

Gee thanks Carol....I believe I do have that one and I love the flowers. Does it have thin brownish stems? I actually have two that are similar but I'm pretty sure it is the one with the brownish stems and the midrib in the leaf....the leaves on the other cutting don't have a midrib.
