Looks as if it is getting ready to bloom ?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Scoot,is that in the ground or pot?
How old is it?

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Hi Don, It's in a pot.

I only just got it from a friend a few weeks ago.

All I know is she said she was sending me a 'sucker' of her plant.

Never did I expect a 4 foot tall sucker, roots , soil and all. lololol

I emailed the pic to her and she said she did not even know they bloom.

Would be cool if there are viable seeds , eh ?

Wichita, KS

That is so cool. I got some seeds for that in trade. Never have been able to get them to germinate.
Keep us posted on how yours does.
~Nuts

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

~Nuts, Did you try the damp paper towel in a baggie method for germinating the seeds ?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

That's nice!
What a good friend.
The flowers are gorgeous when fully opened.

I almost got Tetrapanax papyrifera 'Steroidal Giant' this Summer.
It's a 25' version of yours.

Ric

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

hiya Ric,

Sadly, My friend lost her 'giant' .

I'm really excited waiting to see the flowers on this plant.

What an unexpected bonus.

I must admit that in the beginning all I wanted was the leaves to scavenge for cement casting ... lol

Wichita, KS

Hey, scooter
I tried the paper towel method and the potting soil method.
I have a few seeds left, so will try again.

Yes, that is what I thought, too....those would make GREAT castings!
~Nuts

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

I hope so, the leaves are soft, almost pubescent but they have good veining on the back.

I just may try making a POP cast first and see what it comes out like.

What really drives me nutz is the fuzzy stuff on the leaves and buds.

Wonder what the real name is for this 'fuzzy stuff' ?

I'm not used to seeing it and makes me look twice for mites or mealies.

What a worry wort I am .. lol

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

That floozie is already sending up root suckers ;-)

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Scoot,I got one like you ,but planted mine in the ground,he said they were hardy to zone 6,the guy I got mine from, says his comeback every year, time will tell!

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Don,
If I get increases I will try leaving some in a chosen spot with a good mulching.

Some plants rated for my zone do not make it though.

Laurens, SC(Zone 8a)

I have been wanting one of those! Very nice, eh?!! Bonnie

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Tropicman I didn't think they were hardy in our zone. I have one I got this year that is in a pot. Where I had it sitting outside a baby started after I moved the pot. But I do have a baby in the pot as well. Keep me informed on how yours does this winter. Mine is in the GH for the winter. Don't want to take any chances. It is such a neat plant. If yours comes back next spring I will plant mine in the ground. I do know you have to be real careful where you plant them cause they can take over the area where they are located.

Nuts keep us up todate on how your seeds do.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Bonnie,

Remind me next Spring ( put a sticky on your calendar).

This plant readily sends up suckers so I should have one for ya ;-)

Shirley

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Linda,so far the frost hasn't hurt it at all,but then again its next to a wood fence, the guy who gave it to me has his by the foundation of the house, where even cannas can come back also.
I will mulch real good, before winter gets to bad!!!

Here is a pic of my seeds w/chaff.

Taaaa - Daaaaaa !

ada is my generous plant trading buddy.

The plant she has shown prolly is the mother of mine ;-)

Wichita, KS

That is so cool, Ada
Can you look at the pic of my seeds and tell me if the seeds I received in trade are really this rice plant?
I am wondering if maybe it is not the same.

~Nuts

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

ahelms do you have yours in the ground or pot. I can't wait until mind gets that big. It is gorgeous.

Wichita, KS

Mine MUST be different.
The seed packet says 'Rice Plant' instead of Rice Paper Plant!

Bummer, what a disappointment!

Awwwww nutz! prolly rice grass seed .

Looks like this plant suckers easily.

I should have some to share next year ;-)

Wichita, KS

Thank you, Scooterbug
I will have to remember to look you up next spring.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Linda, I have mine in the ground. The first year I dug it and potted it because i didn't know if it was hardy here or not. The next Spring about 10 or 12 came up so I leave it in the ground now. I bought the Steroid Rice Paper plant this summer for $25 and it died within a week.I don't know what i did wrong for it.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Whats the difference between the Steroid and a regular Rice Paper Plant. Does it just get bigger, or grow faster or maybe both.

Yes they do seem to sucker easy, I already have one nice sucker, and I think another one is starting. So maybe I should have one or two to share for next year.

If Tropicmans does good this winter in the ground I think I will put mind in the ground.

Louisville, KY

Mine have been in the ground 5 years now with mulching. Its did better than in a greenhouse I no longer dig it at all just protect.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Linda, the Steroid plant is supposed to get bigger. I may break down next Spring and buy another one but it's too late to be buying new plants for outside.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

ada , Is the 'giant' just as hardy as the small one ?

Whelp ,
we got our first frost last night so I'll be moving the potted brugs into the barn to shed their leaves before

dragging them in to the spare bedroom and a closet that is nice and cool. hope they all fit ;-)

This is what keeps me from having such a huge plant collection like you have ada , no room for wintering ....... lol

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

That settles it Brian, next summer mine will be going in the ground.

I may check into the Steroid plant next year ahelms right along with you. I have a area that could use some big plants.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Well that settles it...next year a Rice Paper Plant.
We also have no room for any big plants.....
but then we didn't 3 years and 300 plants ago! lol

Ric

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

That is such a cool looking plant. I think I will have to find one next spring.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Just hang around long enough.

I will post a soon as I have some healthy suckers to share next Spring or about then.

I really don't know how fast I can expect them to grow this winter ('-'?)

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Scoot, Plants Delight says it's hardy to Zone 7.
http://www.plantdelights.com/Catalog/Fall/page65.html

Mc Call Creek, MS

Mine comes back every year in zone 8a with lots of suckers. In order to see the blooms, which are a wonderful treat themselves, you have to escape frost until around Thanksgiving or a little later.

The flowers almost remind me of white orchid spikes.

Kay

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Thanks ada ,
I can never remember who has them.............. Wow !

I got my bears breeches to overwinter by putting 2 intact bales of hay over it last Fall.

Got lots of foliage ths year , hopefully next year it will bloom.

Kay ,
mine is still putting out big flower spikes (for lack of a better word).
Do you know what the seeds look like ?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Ric,does 4 years mean 400 plants??? LOL!

Same here on the bear breeches,I get a thin looking burnt frito looking leaf type,That I suspect is where the seed might be,but don't feel anything like a seed in there!!!
