wintering EE Bulbs

Kellyville, OK(Zone 7a)

This is the first time I have grown EE's. I am totally ignorant as to how to preserve these large plants. The stems at the ground is at least 10 in in diameter. Must be a huge bulb underground. The plants themselves are over 8ft tall with leaves 3ftx2ft. With blooms at least 12" long. These plants are so amazing to me that I can hardly shut up about them. Any advice will be very helpfull. I live in zone 6b. Kellyville, Okla.

Hi there,

I successfully overwintered mine last year. I pulled them and cleaned off the bulbs of as much dirt as I could by hand. I then put them in a cartboard box with shredded paper, sealed it up and placed in my basement. I planted them outdoors in spring, I think it was the end of April. It took a bit of ground warming before they came up, but boy did they put on a show. From on bulb last year I wound up with 4 plants plus I gave a way 2!!

I am on Long Island, NY - good luck

I dig mine ,clean as much dirt as I can l Let them dry for awhile outside stick them in the basement in a bag or box. Pull out and plant in the spring. I llike to get mishroom mulch to cover mine with. I get a scoop full at the nursery I like it for the extra warmth.
You will need to wear a clothespin on your nose for a couple days.LOL dixie
